barrel cleening

Sounds like bad carbon buildup. I think Remington 40x bore cleaner is easier to use than JB but both will work. If it is burnt up you have nothing to lose.

jeepcj6: I've seen what I thought was firecracking in throats, with my hawkeye borescope, gave it a good cleaning with JB, and the surface of the bore turned out to be in excellent condition. What you may be seeing is cracking in the surface of the carbon buildup. Get rid of the carbon, and cracking is gone.

LE Hanson: My match barrels, Krieger, Bartlein, Hart will get the JB treatment approx. every 150 to 200 rounds, depending on how much carbon I see with the borescope, and I do not try to take it down to bare metal, only keeping it under control. The main reason? It will require as many as 20 shots before the barrel settles down & starts to shoot again. Anyway, I form a patch on a stab jag by running it thru the bore several times with just a trace of Butch's. Then apply JB to the patch with my finger tip, forcing it into the cloth with no excess amount. Run it thru the bore to coat the surface. Using a snug fitting bronze brush, will give it as little as 10 push strokes, chamber to muzzle only & using a bore guide, or as many as 30, depending on the amount of carbon. Dry patch the bore (patch will be coal black), then run a patch soaked with good old Hoppe's down the bore. Let it set for several minutes, then dry patch. 'Scope it and if required, (seldom does) do it again. I will agree right up front that some or many will disagree with my methods, and believe their way is better, and I understand that, but for me, this method works. :)

fdshuster,

For our collective edification please explain the method you use to apply JB compound to clean your bore. Do you apply it on patches, a bronze brush, a nylon brush, ? How do you remove the JB Compound residue from the bore?

I do not hawe JB paste I hawe VFG bore cleaning compound
and 40-x rem bore cleaner and break-free bore paste I wrap
papertowel on the jag for a tight fit and smear the compound on go back and forth like 20 times twice with no luck

jeepcj6: if I understand correctly, you are not using a brush? It's been my experience that you need the scrapping action of the bristles on the brush to get the hard, baked on carbon out of the barrel. I even tried wrapping a patch around an old bronze brush, and it was not very effective, since I think the brush lost some of it's scrapping ability when covered with the patch.

Paper towel on a jag is probably not going to give you the bore scrub that seems to be needed. You can apply the paste in this way but you'll need to scrub with a brush, try a stiff Iosso blue bore brush first if you're concerned about putting a bronze brush down the bore. After scrubbing, remove any remaining paste with your usual solvent, Hoppes, Butches etc.

One of our local big name custom rifle builders, and benchrest competition winner, likes and uses IOSSO in place of JB, and swears by it, so there's another good choice.

supposedly the same company makes all these products for them. The name is eluding me right now but it starts with u.s. something I believe and they make all these products including iosso.

My barrel seems to be burnt the first 3 inches. Can I make it right with bore paste?

YES, you can make it right!

Comments on JB Bore Cleaning Compound from two well known sources:

"I personally believe in the use of JB Bore Cleaner... I use it after every yardage. 3 to 5 tight fitting patches with JB will get the powder fouling out... I do a full cleaning before I use JB and also after I use JB, to make certain I've got all the JB out of the barrel. ... Tony Boyer"

Krieger Barrels Inc,: Q&A

Q: Will a paste-type bore cleaner such as J.B. hurt a barrel during cleaning?

A: No. There is nothing that we can find that shows that it will harm the barrel provided you use a rod guide and refrain from exiting the muzzle.
