Barrel cleaning ??

The articles on barrel cleaning are "very" interesting but,I have more questions.
If you're "pushing" a one piece rod from the chamber area to the muzzle in a 24",26",28" barrel what keeps the rod from bending and rubbing on the groves in the middle of the barrel?? The rod guides take care of both ends but what about in the middle??
I like the Otis cleaning kit that I can "pull" through the barrel. Any opinions?? Good? Bad? Thanks Mike.

I use a patch worm, very similar to the Otis and Mopro-7 to remove most of the carbon. I am very careful to pull the worm straight out so it does not touch the crown. I don't know if heavy weed-eater cord will hurt the crown or not but why take the chance.

I have been using Pro-Shot 1 piece ss rods, they don't flex.

nothing except the stiffness of the rod...if you are bowing it that bad, the patch is to tight IMO...

Mike the advice on the tight patch is right on. You could also get a TK Nollan barrel saver cleaning rod guide. It is the best.

Some of the folks were talking about a "undersize" brush or patch. Like maybe a .22 for use in a 6MM. Might help keep the "bow" out of the rod? The "pull through" seems like it would help solve the problem. I think I'll practice and see what happens. Thanks for the input guys. Always trying to learn something new. Mike.

I use a .22 caliber Dewey Jag when running cotton patches through my Pac-Nor 6BR. Even with that, it's pretty tight.,Perhaps the tight bore is why the Pac-Nor shoots the Lapua 105s so well--these bullets are about .0006 smaller in diameter than Sierra 107 MKs.)

In order for your barrel to be truly clean...and it's been said before, you just gotta use a brass bristle brush with a good solvent...followed by patches to get the solvent out.

To answer your question Mike, IF you push and pull on the cleaning rod in a manner that keeps it straight with the bore and use a good bore guide...like a Lucas, you should have no problems with the rod getting out of shape and ruining your barrel.

Always use a coated rod like a Dewey and wipe the goo off it when you're through...it should last you several years.

As far as patches go...I use 6-7 MM square Pro Shot patches on my 22s...stab them off center and they'll go through and clean nicely. For 6MM, I use the square 7MM-.38 cal Pro Shot patches the same way.

For my 6PPC I use a Dewey rod with a Sinclair .22 cal jag, and 1 3/8" square patches and Butch's Bore Shine. A friend who wanted a stiffer rod to reduce the chance of bowing with a new brush uses a Pro Shot rod for his brush. It is stiffer because at a similar diameter to a coated rod, it has more thickness of steel. When I have more time,than at a match) I use Wipe-Out, one application for a couple of hours, and a second over night. I probably don't need the latter, but it lets me get down to a consistent starting place with no brushing and only a few patching out rod strokes. At a match I clean with patches and solvent, every second or third group, depending on the barrel, and not brushing every time. After the first wet patch I short stroke, spending the most time in the throat area. The looser patch fit puts more solvent in the bore instead of the chamber, does not cause rod bowing problems, and requires more dry patches at the end to dry the barrel. When I do brush, I take more fouling shots.

I think this will soon be relegated to an "Old Wive's Tail" ...

I have been using Slip2000 Carbon Killer,3-4 patches, then dry) followed by wipeout and barring a borescope viewing which will happen soon, the barrel feels as new while running a tight dry patch. Wipeout patches come out almost clean after the Slip treatment BTW...

If im all wet, i'll report that too

I have all the brushes and jags but I am never sure if it's, barrel) getting cleaned. Some folks say "too" clean. Others say "not" clean enough. I think the targets will tell the tale. Just picked up some nylon brushes and thought I would give them a workout. Matter of fact, I've got the "range" thing going tomorrow with a couple of friends.,Male bonding) :thumb:
Should be a super day. Lots of sunshine and BSing plus some trigger time. No matter what,it will be a "good" day.

I'm going to find out too. My new Kreiger isn't going to see a brush untill I prove to myself it needs one.

I'm a firm believer in Pro Shot Copper Solvent IV. Works great on copper,powder, and carbon. It's bio-degradable and has no odor. It also has the safest MSDS sheet of them all.
You guys breathing some of that other crap out there that's sold for bore cleaning would do well to read those MSDS sheets. May scare the bejesus out of you.

Jason, I just picked up a jar of the Slip 2000 at Bruno's. What do you think is the best way to apply it? Just on wet patches or something else? Thanks.

JB, Danny and all...I tried the same thing with Butches Bore Shine, because that's what the bottle recommended. Bottle also says that excessive fouling may require the use of a brush.

It was removing the copper fouling, but it was carbon fouling that brought the brush back out for me anyway.

I've never seen or even heard of this new stuff you guys are talking about...it might be great...time and testing will tell of course.

I do know that Wipe Out works on carbon, it just makes your barrel look like it's foaming at the mouth!!!
