Barrel block use it or not?

I am about to build my first true BR rifle, I have a laminated stock and two 6mm bartlin barrels that are 30'' long. I have a Rem short action that will be trued and jewell trigger.

My stock is 2'' wide in the action area with a 3'' forarm, I think this will be able to hold the block if I go this route. I would like to make the block 5'' long.

My ? is would I still use the recoil lug or not?
My other ? is should I do this or just pillar bed the action?

Thanks in advance!

Howdy !

I vote you go w/ the ' barrel clamp '.

My hybrid 'stock' utlizes a simple plumbing repair clamp
,'V'-plates ) to secure my 29' 'Palma taper ' 6mm barrel.

Recoil lug.... I vote YES.

My rifle's clamping plates are only 3 1/2' long' although
I had my custom barrel set up w/ a 5' long straight chamber section.

With my stock design, I can relocate clampig plates forwsrd as needed; to fine-tune out unwanted ' veticle '.
It works, and pluming clamp set cost is under $ 7.00

I utilize an aluminum 'I'-beam set on its side; to form an 'H'

Barrel's straight section is clamped to central beam channel.

Forend and butt stock are secured via used of screws.

Recoil lug fits in a slot cut into the inner trough of the beam.

Trigger assy can be removed/installed through a slot in the aft
center beam channel.

Best of luck in your endeavors !

I would be very intereted in seeing your rifle and how you built it. Working on a smallbore silhouette rifle and need all the help I can get
thanks in Advance

I will put up some pic soon as it comes along, I am in college and its hard to get to the machine shop during the week. Nursing school sucks!

I am going to try and keep the rifle under 17lbs, TRY!

I got the alum in today . I am going to make the block 5'' long 1.750 wide and bore the the block with a wire EDM, I think at 1.245''. Just dont know if this the best route or not and clamp with small allen caps screws. I just want to take my time and do this right!

357 mag If you would like to see some great movies and pics of Paratroopers go to this link there are a few of me on my last deployment at the ranch house and Korengal valley in the stan, and shooting in Tenn. http://s535.photobucket.com/albums/ee358/airbornemedic72/

357mag, did you use any bedding material for the recoil lug or under the action anywhere. How does the setup handle torque?
Are you shooting free recoil with your setup? I am asking because with that light of a setup, that 5/4 Fiberon plank you used for the rear portion looks like it would make the shoulder a little sore.

Very COOL, thanks for the pics.
