To start, the rifle is a Vanguard Synthetic Sub MOA in 300WSM. The problem was it wouldn't shoot worth a damn... neither factory loads nor any of my handloads.
a post in the Weatherby forum got me to thinking... the rifle was tested in a "Jig" that only held the action and the barrel was free. The synthetic stock had two knobs at the fore end that pushed up on the barrel. The factory and some stock makers say that a 99% of most rifles benefit from a 4-5# preload at the forearm.
I found after removing thes two bumps from my stock that my rifle is a 1%er. It shoots much better with the barrel free floating..
I have a new laminated stock on the way. I need a 16" pull and the synthetic looks like ofal with a 2 1/2" spacer in it! I am planning to only bed the action and free float the barrel.
Here is the question: is there a way to soft bed the barrel, ie. foam or something that will dampen the harmonics and yet let the barrel still move?
