barrel/action bedding

What are the pro,s) and con,s) of extending the action bedding to the first 2" forward of a Tubb recoil lug installed on Rem 700 SA. Cal is 22-250,converted to single shot by epox'ng a magazine filler in) and barrel is heavy varmint, 26" long.....using Dev-Con as bedding agent. Holland Pillars will be used.
How deep should/can bedding be done?

I usually do not bed any of the barrel. If you decide that you want to, do it. You can always remove it if you think it doesn't work out.

The pro is that it helps support that Remington action that could flex under the stress of having a long heavy barrel installed on it. The Remy and other factory actions are not as strong as the customs and may benefit from this extra bedding. I have done it to all of my big game and varmint rifles over the years and I cant say it ever hurt accuracy. On a couple that I free floated because I was having problems, I quickly found out it wasnt the bedding under the barrel that caused the problems as they still wouldnt shoot. I say go ahead and do it and If you think its not a good thing, remove it as the previous poster suggested.

On the Savage Varmint tapers I think the weight of that barrel Vs the action bedding... an inch or two barrel bedding balances the weight & reduces strain on the whole set-up..My rem 700 with a hart barrel {more modest taper} has the first inch bedded also.My Sako varmint has so little epoxy in there I'd say it's bare..So far it shot a few good groups...I'm not a benchrest shooter...but it seems to work for my .3 to .2 size group ability...one of these days I want to put one in a glue up action/first inch or so of barrel ...locked right down in there...Lately loose action screws seem to get the goofy things going on my varmint rigs..mike in ct
