barnes 53 grain tsx

well... interesting late afternoon....about two weeks ago i picked up some 52 grain sierra match hpbt and saw a lonley box of 53 grain barnes tsx sitting on the shelf and it followed me home.... i have used barnes triple shock before and really like them.... but had never shot any of the .224 53 grain before... got them home and then saw the sticker on the side that said for 12 twist or faster..... just what i needed with a 220 ackley with a 14 twist >:( >:(
well i know that barnes triple shock need to be jumped quite a ways and like speed. so i decided to give it a go in my swift.... now take into consideration that my old swift's barrel has some errosion... about 2500+ rounds and not one of those went through the hole at less than 4000 fps....
i loaded up about 6 of the 53 grainers ahead of 45.8 grains of ramshot big game and jumped them at approx. 125 thousands..... i have no idea of what the speed was because my neighbor owns my chrono ;D ... i had three holes cutting each other on two groups... yes i was grinning....
so all i have to say to the person that says it can't be done is ... get out of the way of the person doing it....

Thats definitely impressive coyoteklr! Sounds like you may have another go to load for that rig. Don't hear much about the ol 220 Swift anymore, let alone a 220 ackley. May have to try one before too long ;)! Thanks for good load data too :)!

Very cool! I may have to try some of those 53 grain Barnes in my Swift. If they like a jump then they may work very well in a Swift of mine that also has some throat erosion but still shoots very well.

the swift has resurgence every so often.... and even though ruger has stopped making them..... the swift will survive... i have had several and will always have a soft spot in my heart for them....when i was really young i had a friend that i knew that was a wwI vet and we competed shooting whitetail bucks.. he had a 220 swift with a huge scope on it..... i was 10 and shooting a gambles 22lr 5 shot clip.... the last time he hunted we were both after a huge body 5x5 and i had a chance to pop him and held off and told this fellow about where i had seen the buck that day in hopes Jesse would be able to get him.... he got sick a couple of days later and then died about 2 months later..... i never saw that buck again but he produced off-spring .... i got one of them 3 years later... 5" double drop tine one on each side 4x4......i used my dads 270 until i was 15 and then bought a model 64 win. 30-30 and a box of shells from a friend for 60 bucks .... then when i was 17 i had saved enough to by my first 220 swift.....
I really like the tsx for just about any caliber.... the smaller cal. doesn't open up as well on thin skinned as well a deer and antelope..... the 85 grain in the 243/6mm is deadly on antelope, deer and a bigger ungulate that i won't mention......
but they need speed and 80 to 100 thousands jump
 
10-4 on the Swift resurgence. They seem to come and go. You can still order one from Remington custom shop. I'm not sure who else chambers them as far as factory? There are more guys than I thought on this forum that have the King of Speed. I own 2 at this time and am working on another Swift with an 8 twist for heavy bullets. Been shooting the Swift going on 22 years and have wore out a few along the way. My favorite cartridge when I need to get that satisfaction of 4,000 FPS or more. :)

wait wait..... i was just talking to my gunsmith the day i went to town and got my bullets.... i talked to him about rebarreling my swift to a 8 twist because of how well my ar shoots everything from 55 to 70 grains..... that is amazing because i have never heard of anyone else rebarreling a .224 to 8 twist ...... i know i probably live under a rock...... ;)
 
you can shoot pretty much everything up to 70 grains (except the 70 grain TSX) with a 9 twist AR. When you are throwing the bullets down range at 4000 fps, I'd bet you can get away with a 10 twist.
 
coyoteklr: Just by chance, do you remember where you got dies for a 220 Swift A.I.? I looked in my Sinclair catalog figuring Redding would probably have them but, to my dismay they didn't. I appreciate it!

it has been awhile, but I would call sinclair and talk to rod or ron .... if that doesn't work call graff and sons between the two i know you can get some...... ;)

Actually I am considering another .220 Weatherby Rocket with about a 28 inch 8 twist barrel set up for 75 A Max. I still have my Neil Jones dies he made up for me a while ago. Or you can always put in a special order with Redding for dies, but may take 4 months or longer? Best bet is have a custom set made based on your fired cases.
