Go down to your local bicycle shop. They should have an assortment of ball bearings that are used for wheel bearings, headsets and older bottom brackets.Most likely hardened tool steel. Seek out a bearing supply house or look on the internet for McMaster Carr or Granger for a real ball bearing ball or .250 gauge ball to replace your original. Big box hardware stores have assortments of balls but they are of unknown origin and hardness.
