I found a used remington 700 varmint in 308 ..I think it's 2013 . Not sure the twist rate tho .
I've heard there was some bad years for remington barrels ? He's asking 800 it's in really good shape but I could get a brand new one for about 1k

Early 2000’s to about 2012 were decent years for R700 Varmint barrels. Especially Varmint weight models such as 700P, LTR, Sendero, 5R Mil Spec, 5R Tactical Cerakote, and VSSF models chambered in .223 Rem. I had many .223 Varmint weight models from said time period and all were fantastic shooters. After around 2012 QC began taking a nose dive and getting a good barrel was more of a lottery. YMMV.

So another words don't even chance it on a new model ?

Like I said YMMV. Your chances of a decent barrel in a factory Rem are not all that high compared to the possibility of getting a dog of a barrel that won’t shoot.

If you want to buy a factory rifle and want accuracy then look no further than Tikka T3X…any of the models. The CTR has a barrel sized almost like the Rem Varmint contour and CTR’s will blow you away with the accuracy capability for a production mass produced rifle. Those Finns know how to build accurate barrels that are still reasonably priced. I’ve honestly seen some of the heavier barreled Tikkas shoot inside some custom rifles. With Tikka your chances of a good shooting barrel are quite high.

I’m sure they let some lemons go out the door but very few. Even the sporter weight T3X Lites weighing not even 7 lbs will shoot well under MOA using factory match ammo. I’m not much of a fan of mass produced factory rifles anymore and usually build customs. But the Tikkas are really a value for what you spend compared to the performance you get. They will shoot circles around R700’s from any era.

Just my opinion.

I really thought about a ctr for a while . Just never seen one in person. Non around here . So it's basically a rem varmint contour barrel just shorter ?

On the flip side Remington RR serialized receivers had a very good chance of being truer than any of the previous generation or two receivers. $800 does sound high though.

I've helped several putting together Tikka's and I'll say they do all seem to shoot. All were T3's with the 5/8x24 threaded sporter barrel's.

I've got a 2017 .223 varmint heavy barrel in a 1-14" twist and it shoots very well. I bought it used in 2017 but it had only had around 10 rounds through it. I had to call Remington and give them the serial # off the barrel to find out the twist. But I got lucky, I only gave $500 for mine.

Iv heard the newer ones where better barrels . Only reason i'm considering buying the gun and putting it in a stock is because i'm having such a hard time finding a used receiver and bolt

I have 2 R700 with RR actions. One is a 308 that had a runway trying to seat bullet close to lands. The other i bought as a 243 just for the action. Changed the whole thing up. I have ran into several guys with issues with these actions after blueprinting them. The bolt timing is off and they have extraction issues. Its known over the web. Have to get bolt handle re timed. I left mine alone and have no issues. The guys i know all had different smiths blueprint theres so its not just a bad job. Its an actual issue.

Truing a Remington should include moving or replacing the bolt handle. Kind of how it's always been or should be. If you remove bolt lug and lug abutment material you are potentially skating on thin ice. I have an RR where I was careful to remove bare minimum and while it doesn't have full extraction cam it's just fine with the factory handle in the factory position with a 308 case. I think as long as you have some cam left with a standard case along with a chamber, brass and size die that all work together you're going to be fine.
