Bad news for Berger's .20 cal 55gr bullet

I talked to Berger earlier today and confirmed, they're discontinuing their .20 caliber 55gr bullet. So anyone that shoots this bullet and doesn't already have a healthy supply of them, you may want to get some ordered up because once they are gone from the shelves, that'll be it.

Not exactly what I wanted to hear, considering this is the only bullet I shoot in my 20-250. I know none of the big companies make anything like the Berger 55's but what about some of these smaller, specialty, bullet makers, does anyone else make even a 50 grainer, let alone something heavier???

Yes there are boutique/niche pill rollers and I've read of 63 grainers....I just can't pull the name(s) outta my membership bank (union outfit ;) ).
I wished we could get some vld types around 48-52 gr and some 44 - 45s w blitz king type jackets POW!! Hair teeth and eyes allll over the countryside. Give Skippy a free aerial tour on his way out. ;)))

Darn. Anyone who has a lead on some wonderful 20 VLDs, it would be greatly appreciated. I'm wanting something for my 9 twist 20 vartarg that's more slippery than the 40gn offerings.

Not sure if Unmussig bullets is still in business but they made so heavies for the .20 cal and it looks like Black Hole bullets makes a 55gr 20 cal bullet but I don't know much about them either. I just picked up 1000 Berger 55's so that'll probably last me through a couple barrels. :D

I realize its most likely a simple business decision but I havent seen anything good from them for a while. They used to have a variety of 17 cal bullets too. At one time they had 15, 18, 20, 22, couple 25s, couple 30's, and 37 gr offerings. Now they have one 25gr bullet. Dont think I would ever build around one of their bullets again.

Check with username "BadgerBob" on Saubier.com; his first name is Bob. He was making 46.5 gr. and 55 gr. 20 cal. bullets. as of early last year.

B23, thanks for the heads up. The 55 gr 20 cal Berger is my favorite bullet for the 20 BR and 20-22/250. I've shot Blaine's 20 cal 55gr Rebated Boat Tail quite a bit. It's an excellent bullet. Very accurate in my rifles...less than 2" (3-shot) groups at 500 yards. He told me once he designed it more for coyotes, but I've killed a lot of ground squirrels at ranges beyond 400 yds with it, but not as explosive as the 20 cal 55 gr Berger on the little critters in my opinion. 7315br

Forgive me on this but who is Blaine? Or is that the company?

Thank you!

I’m ready to call it quits with Berger. I built a rifle a few years ago to shoot the 50s.....as soon as I got that gun they discontinued that bullet and now I have my .204 all set up for 55s and have been having great luck with them on coyotes and discontinued again.

I couldn’t find 105 hunting vld’s for quite awhile last summer and ran out. Couldn’t find 75s in the .224 for awhile last year as well.

They make great stuff but they are certainly following certain niches of shooting. Which I can’t blame them for doing of course but it is certainly frustrating.

Thankfully there are some great “custom” 20 caliber makers out there.

This is a great reminder for us all: don't build a gun that can only shoot one bullet. I'm counting myself lucky that I wasn't banking on the 55s and will be fine with 40s for my purpose of 300yards and in target shooting. I was thinking about focusing on the 55 and 40 Bergers, but I think I may just use up the box of each I bought to start out and focus on getting something good going with the 39 sierra or 40 vmax until a promising 40-50 VLD shows up.
