Bad die?

New 6br barrel, dies and brass. Fired one. Tried to size it. I think my die is bad. Measures .2595 above the bulge. Is that right?

I have done that when my expander was set too high. Try sizing a case with the expander removed.

A 6mm or 243 sized neck should measure around .270" OD

Are you using a bushing die?

The excess scratches on case body is not a good sign.

Obviously a full length die with expander ball.

You need to read the die.setup instructions. You have the expander.ball set too high.

Yep, the ole expander ball too high turtleneck.Also, I would suggest flushing that die with brake cleaner as I hope those scratches are from grit and not from the chamber.

Don't feel bad. The reason I knew is I have done it myself. I like the forester full length dies best of all the production dies because of the.location of the expander. They make really straight reloads.

Same here, I have trashed a good piece of brass this way as well.

I have been reloading 50 years. I find full length sizing dies with an expander work just fine. These days the bushing dies are all the rage. I have them and use them but.they come with problems of their own.

I use different dies for different purposes. Depends on the rifles intended purpose. If I had my rathers all my dies would be custom full length dies. But that would be overkill for some purposes.

The .259 doesn't surprise me either, IIRC my old Forester had about .007 reduction without the ball.

Yes my Forester also sized to .259. I had it honed out to .265.

I am so dumb I ruined two pieces of brass before I read the directions on my first set of Forster dies. I do prefer them now.

Necks size to .267 when done right. .269 loaded.
