B.R.- REST?

Link

Silver $$ Contributor
Hi I know a lot of people use a bag for the rear support.
What's a dough-nut, and how to use it?
But how about the front? I use a plastic screw jack - for the lack of a better description. Is there something better? If so where can I see pictures or order one?
Thanks Link - the new guy

You might want to consider a good quality windage top on a Hart or Sinclair base. Good tops are made by Ron Hoehn, Sinclair, Bald Eagle, Russ Haydon, and a few others. If you want to look at vendors who sell these, go to the index at www.benchrest.com. A donut is a special sandbag that is configured as a small tube shaped to the fit just inside the perimeter of the base of a rear sand bag to prevent it from rocking. It was invented by the late great Skip Otto, world class shooter, gunsmith, and inventor of benchrest acessories. More recent bag designs have incorporated a base that is designed to perform the same function, although many top shooters still use the donut. If you have never shot with a good rest/sandbag setup, you are in for a treat. Have fun.

Nowadays the donut really comes into it's own when the benchtops have an upper surface with humps and bumps. I bought a Protektor Bumblebee to replace a Caldwell and at the first event with the rigid bottom bag I drew a bench with a nice hump right where the rear bag needed to be.

I then bought a used bag complete with donut to match the flat bottomed stock on my new rifle. Works great no matter what the bench top looks like.
