Av price of chamber job

I have been wondering, what's the current price of a chamber job and the barrel threaded for a tuner?. One of the best charged me about $600. I'm not about to complain if it's high. Just wondering.

I just paid $500 to have a Remington 700 action trued, Krieger barrel re-contoured, threaded, chambered and installed on the action.

RW Snyder Custom Guns in Manning Iowa. The only Krieger barrel I could find was a heavy bull contour. I did not realize Snyder did not have a cnc lathe to do the re-contour. He farmed it out to a machinist friend with a CNC lathe. Snyder's work is excellent. Headspace is right and rifle (.223) is sub 1/2 MOA after 40 rounds. There are small local smiths out there that are good.

Thanks for the info . Good to hear real world experience . Like you said many good gunsmiths out there . I don't mind not following the crowd and trying new folks . I took a gamble on a Remage barrel from a smith I saw mentioned here on the forum...despite the skeptics that just wanted to be negative for no good reason . Less than a week after my order/payment my barrel arrived, quick service for sure . I now have a hunting rifle that shoots half inch groups , 1/4 inch when I concentrate . Turned out my gamble was worth the $ 342 which included the barrel nut and threading the muzzle.

A good gunsmith/machinist can do a rebarreling job in a couple of hours.
$500 is outrageous IMO. It’s not brain surgery. This is making prefits more attractive. Large and small companies like shilen with state of the art equipment are making some excellent prefits. And I doubt anyone can tell the difference.

I do agree that is a bit high for the work you had done. When I decided to start shooting precision rifles, I shopped for a gunsmith. I wanted one within driving distance, and I particularly wanted one who understood precision shooting. This forum has many gunsmiths who know precision shooting but few who are within 100 miles of where I live. From what I have seen on this forum, all seem to be charging prices that are reasonable and most times nearly identical.

When making decisions on craftsmanship, price is the last thing I consider. I am more concerned, with the results, than price. When picking a gunsmith, I want one who takes the time to explain any questions, I may have, as well as his craftsmanship. He should show interest in my project, explain what I need for the application, I intend use it for. I've called my guy to have something done and at times he has explained, why I don't need to do it.

I could do it in a couple of hours. I never do that. I always to the $500 job, both for myself and others. It show up on paper.

I've paid 450 and 400 from two different Smith's respectively. That didn't include threading the muzzle and didn't include the barrel.

It's expensive, but I want good gunsmiths to make a comfortable living and be able to afford new equipment when they need it. I suspect that they're spending maybe 2-3hrs, meaning a fully burdened shop rate of 150-200 per hr. That pays for their rent, their equipment, their insurance, both property, liability, and health, their utilities, their shop supplies, machine maintenance and new tooling, and then their wage. That 200/hr becomes a take home of MAYBE 30/hr.
