ATTN: .220 & .220 AI Swift Owners

Just about finished my .220 AI , and at that point of selecting powder. I have 2 projectiles earmarked for hunting , 40 grain Nosler BT & 53 grain Hornady Vmax.
The barrel is a Krieger 26" 1:14 Rem Varm profile. Problem is my powder selection is limited to ;
2206H ( H4895 )
2208 ( Varget )
2209 ( H414/H4350)
I would love to try some N140/150 but its hard to get here.

My thinking is 2206H for the 40 grain & 2208 or 2209 for the 53 grain. As this is my first foray into a fast .22 any info is most welcome.

regards
Mike.

H-414 and H-4350 are not even closely related in speed or type of powder.

ADI does not make H-414.

My current standard Swift in a 13 twist I use strictly H-414. I also used same powder in same gun before I rebarreled and that one was a stock 14 twist Heavy Varmint Winchester barrel probably made by Schneider. I would go with the 53 V-Max driven hard with a nice case load of 2209 ( H-414) In my experience Varget and H4895 are too fast of a burn rate for an AI version of the mighty Swift.. The 53 V-Max has a very decent BC and if driven at over 4000 fps will definitely get the job done! I've been a fan of the 55 Nosler BT for years but have recently switched over to the 53 V-Max in both my standard Swift and sons 22-250 LRPV.

Apparently ADI 2209=H4350. I've never used it in my regular swift. Tried imr 4350 and was never impressed. I would definitely lean towards the heaviest bullets and slowest powders you can get to work in that 14 twist (which is unfortunately what my Douglas barrel is). I've had the best luck with RL15 and 52 sierra match kings, H414 and 55 v-max, N160 with any 55gr bullet, and the best overall has been imr 4007ssc (discontinued) and 50gr v-max.

As others have said, the other two powders are going to be too fast potentially with the extra capacity of the AI. Varget should work nicely for 40gr bullets, but there will be far better for the heavier.

Also, in my rifle the Norma cases are superior and worth the cost. Primers don't matter, other than I've stopped using Win as they seem to not fit the primer pockets as tightly as I'd like.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen , cases are not a problem , I have 300 Normas and about 12,000 primers to choose from none of them Winchester.
I may have lucked onto some N160 , if the guy wants to sell it , that is .

Mike.

N-160 may be too slow for 53 class bullets. I forgot to add in my original post that I have owned two .220 Weatherby Rocket's which is very close to .220AI case capacity. I used N-150 in both of them under 55 Nosler BT's. N150 and H414 is where you want to be burn rate wise.

There will certainly be faster powder choices. With 55s, I was shooting the max load out of the Lyman manual (44.0) with great results. Definitely required a 6" drop tube. And I am seating long at that- 2.780" COAL with 55vmax.

Again , thanks Guys , still limited on powder choice though but N150 is a possibility , any of the AA or RL powders are of very limited supply unfortunately , so I might have to work up loads with Varget & H4350 ( 2209)
