ATK to Acquire Caliber Company, Parent Company of Savage Sports Corporation
ATK Expands Shooting Sports Portfolio with a Top Hunting Brand

May 13, 2013

ARLINGTON, Va., May 13, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- ATK (NYSE: ATK) announced it has entered into an agreement to acquire Caliber Company, the parent company of Savage Sports Corporation. Savage is one of the world's largest manufacturers of hunting rifles and shotguns, delivering innovative products for more than 100 years. The acquisition would expand ATK's portfolio offering by adding long guns to its leading brands in commercial and security ammunition, shooting sports and security-related accessories. The transaction is subject to regulatory approvals and customary closing conditions. ATK anticipates closing the transaction in the first quarter of its Fiscal Year 2014 (FY14), which ends June 30, 2013.

Is this a good or bad thing? I am not so sure if everything under one roof is so great, but there is nothing we can do about it.

ATK has quite a list of companies under their banner,RCBS, Federal,CCI,Speer, just to name a few. All of these have top notch CS dept. and quality control depts. not to mention the warranties.
So in my mind I feel it can only make a very good company better.

I would like to see them pickup Sierra. I am an ATK retiree and get a very good discount on all ATK products. Later! Frank

I got it strait from the top, and you ain't gonna win it all this time. But we might allow you to get by with a small sum of $100K.

I hope ATK doesn't do to Savage what Freedom Group did to Remington. I think that they ruined Remington. My last 2 rifles have been Savages. And I will not buy a Remington.

You have to wonder if ATK is going to remain content to own only Speer as a bullet source.
They also own Federal, and there has been talk of Sierra and Remington.
Wayne.

The big difference with the Savage acquisition is that ATK doesn’t own other gun manufactures. When S&W bought T/C they said no changes then shut the plant and moved the tooling – to an anti-gun state. Marlin’s acquisition has lead to some quality problems, etc. But, ATK hasn’t got an existing product line to compromise Savage. Time will tell.

It seems to me that ATK has been pretty hands off with Speer so far. The rifle line hasn't moved other cutting some of the Hot Core line up for the new Deep Curl. I doubt any of the high end bullet makers are losing any sleep over fears of competition from Speer at this point.
I hope they leave Savage on the same path they have been on, which is what has made them an attractive target for acquisition.
