at the range...

this morning was bright with early sunlight, clear and finally cooler then of late. The range had one person at it...me. Then I was struck with the thought that it couldn't get any better than this. Quiet consecration, dedication and release of a perfect [near perfect ] shot down range...all morning, one after another. Reading the slight changes in the wind and drifting the shot on target. If our wives knew how sweet this was we would all be in hot water!! Have a great day...going back out tomorrow.

I have had the same days occasionally when my mind was clear with no worry. Keep it up and report your accuracy with a little about the gun itself.

I call days like this ---Monday. Every Monday for 3 years excluding Holiday Mondays and then it's Tuesday.

Early mornings are great for all the reasons you mentioned. Pretty soon though others are going to find out and we'll have to share the peace and solitude :(

Be very very careful at the range alone. I had just set up my target at 400 and was on my way back to the line when someone had started firing, they showed up after I had gone down range. I yelled, they stoped, he tried to apologize, I told him he was lucky I was not packing, because I would have returned fire. I now wear a bright red jacket when I go to the range on Mondays, and will not go past 200 unless someone I know stays on the line. That said, I love hitting the range on Mondays, and the big plus, Monday is a regular day off for me ;D

Yep, there's a reason for why we put up with all the travails of our daily lives. For some fortunate folks it may be family who give their lives meaning, for others it's moments like you've described.

We all ought to do everything we can to make sure we recognize the moments in our lives like that and hold them dear. Thanks for sharing.

I've built my rifle on a Savage target action with a kreiger barrel in 30 BR. Yhe stock is mine and the scope is an old weaver 36. I use Fowler 118 with 36grs. of Benchmark... 1/4 inch groups or better can be had on ant day if I do my part.

At least at our range we have a bell and flashing red light to show that someone's down range. No handling of firearms or entering the "shooting area" while they are activated. Someone shows up while you're out at the 300 yard line (max distance here) and they don't get to even set up their firearm until the person turning on the bell returns and turns it off.

Boht Four Courners and the Albany rifle and pistol club, both in my area have the same system of lights and horns...even if you are the only one out there, use them every time...even if the buzzer is really loud when your standing next to it at the switch!

Had that same thing happen to me and my grandson one time...My truck sat right there..I yelledand they took off..I was able to get the plate number and found out it was a state troopers son ..Bot did he catch hell....I guess he was banded from the club for life...Good thing I think..He was a stupid ass..

For those shooting at ranges that don't have any "Cease Fire" warning system, I would strongly suggest that they wear a "High Visibility" vest or even their hunting "blaze orange" while down range.

At least until they find a cure for Stupid. ::)

Just seems to me if a car or truck is there they should know someone is there..DUH

It would be a logical assumption. Unfortunately far to many people don't apply logic due to a physical condition called "Cranial Rectal Inversion".

If people always applied logic when around guns and shooting, there'd be almost NO accidents, ever.

Aye, madderg, it's a sweet thing the range one or two days per week. Thanks for the thinking of it. Don't forget the reloading in preparation for it. That's almost as much pure pleasure.

In 20 minutes it's off I go. Wind forecast for the morning is 2-3 mph. That usually means at our sheltered range "no wind".

I am retired and work as a volunteer range master at our local range a day now and then. I have noticed something that used to be was almost never seen. Back when the rifles were almost all bolt action or single shot, I never saw this , but with the advent of the AR15 frenzy and the cost of ammo through the roof, reloading for the .223/5.56 round has become popular. It seems that many shooters are more concerned with loading the fastest, baddest "ZOMBIE" killer around, rather than working for accuracy. One of our duties as a range master is at closing make a pass down the range and sweep up the brass left or missed by shooters. I cannot believe the hugh numbers of spent primers that have come out of the primer pockets in the semi auto guns. A check of these shows very badly flattened and cratered primers, indicating sevier preasure build up. I am waiting and dreading when one of these blow up on one of the shooters who are loading such hot loads. So far we have only had a handgun blow up with no serious injuries.
