Army qualification target dimensions 1952

Fellows,
i have been having a discussion with younger army guys about qualifing course of the 1952-56 where we shot 600, 300, and 200 with the Garand- prone slow, sitting and kneeling rapid, and standing slow.

i was asked the "v" and bull sizes and have no idea. Do any of you happen to know them or where they may be found on the net, i have Googled but got nothing for my working that helped.

Thanks for your input.

Bob

I think i remember the targets in the 60's 2-300 yds. had a 3" V ring and the 1000 yd. had a 10" V ring and the 10 ring was 20". I can't remember the 600 size for sure but i would guess the V ring would be 6"….. jim

Try theses links. The FM's are listed and those should have the target dimensions inside.

These are interesting but not the same course of fire we shot.

in the era 1954-62m on the 519th, inf, 81 div rifle team, shooting at Benning, Jackson, Gordan, McClelan, etc. we shot the following in matches,

600 - 20 rnds slow prone
300 - 10 rnds rapid fire, standing to sitting/kneeling
300 - 10 rnds rapid fire, standing to prone
200 - 10 rnds standing, no sling, slow fire
max 250 points plus "V" ring hits

each bull shot counted 5, and the "V" ring hits were used to break ties. the other rings were 4,3,2,

my question is do any of you have the infor as to what the Bull and "V" ring measured on these targets.

in championship matches the number of shots fired was a multiple of this setup.

originally we shot issue m1's and ammo, later we received NM rifles full time and Match ammo for the matches.

The 200 and 300 yard targets had 12" bullseye and the V ring was 4" diameter.

The 600 yard bull was 20" diameter and had a 10" V ring.

1000 yard bull was 36" diameter and had a 20" V ring!

Ask me how I know!

I shot in the Marines and my memory is getting foggy. 20 rds. standing and 10 rds. standing to sitting rapid, 300 was 10 rds. standing to prone and 600 was 20 rds slow fire. That was the short course long was double rapid fire at 2 and 3. that was with the M1 then it was with the M14…. They were 5 value not 10 as i said before. We use to win and were paid with Sears certificates and they could be redeemed at the store for i think 80 cents on the dollar value. This was to keep you eligible for the Olympics……… jim

Jim, It seems the only diff was in the standing 200 As the max score Army was 250, every time I hit 250, I got pat on the back, no sears coupon.

The "v"'s were what we worked for as they often were the tie breaker, I never made it that far up the ladder to be concerned about being eligible for the Olympics.

my interest in the measurement of the "v" ring was to find out just how accurate the M1 nm and match ammo were when at 600 prone you got 16-18 "V"'s in the conditions at that time. 10" ain't so bad

Ok, how do you know?

Thanks, for the answer

Bob

I know because I shot with the All-Army Rifle Team at Ft. Benning on the Service Rifle Squad and then for another 40 years shooting Match Rifle as a civilian!

SIr RMulhern,

did you have the opportunity to know Hook Boutin?

if you were there in the mid to late 50's we shared some of the same dust at Benning.

Didn't meet/know him. A few I recall: William R. Lee, Tommy Poole, Verle Wright, Margaret Murdock, John Foster, Gary Anderson, Ray Campbell, Mike Dunia.
