AR Triggers ??

A few of the long bbl [target] Ar's I'm looking considering say they have 2 stage triggers. Armalite is the only one that lists specs; 1st stage 2.5 #, 2nd stage 4.5-5.0 #. Shouldn't that be the other way, like set triggers, a hard pull to set and a light squeeze to make it fire ??

Thank you

My DDM4V5 is set harder on 1st and lighter on 2nd. I do not how long the trigger will last, but I have thought about an upgrade. Not sure which one yet.

The problem with a heavy 1st stage and a real light 2nd stage (on a 2 stage trigger) is you can easily pull right through the 2nd stage on your trigger take up. The 2nd stage needs to be heavy enough that you get the feel of hitting the 2nd stage without accidentally pulling right through it. With a set trigger you cannot pull through the 1st stage (at least with the ones I have worked with you cannot).

Thank you,
I guess Armalite's site could have the pull on the two stages backward, logic would have the 1st stage at 4.5-5.0 # and the 2nd stage at 2.5 #. i'll give them a call Monday and get it straight

I think the 2nd stage weight is the cummulative weight as I highly doubt ARmalites 2nd stages takes another 4.5 pounds to break and 4.5 pounds is the minimum they want for the entire weight as thats the minimum for EIC competitions.

On my service rifles I use 3 1/2 lbs on the first stage and 1 lb on the second stage. My match guns are about 2 lbs on the first and 3/4 lb on the second. Those pull weights are pretty typical for competition guns, though some match rifle guys go even lighter.

The way it was explained on another site is that the lite pull is the 1st stage and the heavier pull is the one that makes the weapon fire. Monday I;ll find out if it's 2.5 # + another 2.5 # to get the weapon to fire, or 2.5# + 4.5 #
Looking more & more like I just get a LH 700 and a good after market trigger

It is accumulative. The best trigger I have found is a jewell,2nd would be the timney or chip mcormick drop in types. The jewell is a bit tricky installing it,but the rewards are the better trigger and lightness of pull safely that is. The geiselle's are great but quite expensive.

I had a Jewel in my Shilen barreled 204 Ar for about 3 month es. I loved it at first and then it gave me trouble. It refused to let gun fire a second round. I called Jewel tech support 3 times and they failed to solve the issue. I removed the trigger and installed 3 lb Jp springs on a dpms mill spec trigger and removed the overtravel myself. I am very happy with results. I was not impressed with the finicy Jewel trigger. Just my opinion I hope their 700 triggers are much better?

On 4.5 pound 2 stage. On take up of first stage, say 3.5 you have preloaded the trigger with 3.5 of pressure. another 1 and its gone. Its that simple. With jewell you have a lot of versatility on what ratios between first and second stages you can play with. The most of any trigger out there without bending trigger springs. The only down side to the jewell is it has a long trigger reset. And lock time is a little slow(so Ive been told) Aftermarket hammer springs can be used to speed things up a little. Other than that they are great triggers. Very durable. For the money you cant beat it. I own geissele and jewell The only thing I like better about the geissele is the short trigger reset. (when shooting rapid fire)

I've had both Jewell and Geissele triggers in my ARs. On the Jewell, I've had the 1st stage spring break on 2 rifles which were replaced at no cost to me, but the rifle was out of action till I received the parts. I've had no trouble with the Geissele. If the Jewell has any more problems, I will replace all of them with Geissele.

++ on the Geissele. Wonderful 2-stage that has performed flawlessly. Only have to cry once when you pay for it!! Eric in DL

My first non factory trigger was a Jewell on a Bushy service rifle. It was noticably better than the factory trigger. I now have a Geissele on my match rifle also with a total of 4.5# onit. It is so much better than the Jewell. I don't shoot a lot of service rifle any more or I would upgrade to a Geissele. Either trigger will be an improvment over a stock one.

I installed a Geiselle SS-E on my AR. Excellent trigger. Mine is non-adjustable (well adjustable via the good ol' gunsmith method), and the break is right at 3.5lbs, with the first stage being 2lbs of that. Love that trigger, they make an adjustable
one that is worth considering if you need adjustability.

I built my own AR with a Shilen barrel and Jewel trigger for hunting prairie dogs/coyotes and punching paper at the club. At first I used a JP 2 lb single stage trigger, but could not get it to feel light enough and a buddy suggested the Jewel 2 stage. As someone else mentioned, it is tricky to install compared to JP or a mil spec, but Jewel got on the phone with me and walked me through installing it which took 10 minutes with the coaching. I have the first stage at its lightest setting (can't remember the lbs) and the second stage at .7 lbs. I love the take up and feel the second stage "wall" easily. The second stage breaks like ice. I removed all the overtravel and creep and used blue lock tight on the overtravel screw (at first had an issue with it backing out). This trigger brought my groups down by 1/2 MOA and made me think more about my trigger control.

Geissele is the best two stage trigger available for the AR: the military agrees and so do competitors. They have a range of prices and configurations to suite most tastes. I really appreciate the reliability of this trigger....have never had a single problem. One of my triggers was not totally smooth, but Derrick Martin at Accuracy Speaks quickly educated me on using lapping compound to smooth out the trigger in a hurry. Since then, the trigger has been a beauty.
