AR Float Tube on a Savage Barrel Nut?

Hi Guys,

I am day dreaming of a project and am unsure if it is possible. I'm looking into the possibility of building a bull pup chassis for a 10/110 Savage based rifle. I am thinking that given the number of AR15 free float tubes on the market, I might be able to integrate one for the forend of the chassis.

So the question is this, could a barrel nut with 1.05"x20tpi thread be fashioned to accept an AR15 barrel nut with 1.25"x18tpi? I am just unsure whether or not there would be enough material to maintain the integrity of the nut?

Thanks all and God bless!

Re: Machinist Help?

Go with a tube that has a rail on top. From my experience, I think it would be easiest with a DD MFR12.0 or 15.0 because it has an inner ring on the inside that you could take out and have a machinist make a replacement inner ring to work as an adapter. Since it's a Savage action, You could have the inner ring able to take the place or fit up against the recoil lug and be secured by the barrel nut.

Re: Machinist Help?

I was just thinking that with an MI Gen 2 SS rail all I would need is to have a nut made with the od matching the id of the tube. It's a very simple mount, but I think it would be effective, and light to boot.

Another issue is that on a bull pup, the scope would have to be mounted on the free float tube. Do you see any issues retaining 0, so long as the tube is sufficiently mounted?

There is a photo of the nut here:

Thinking just have it made smooth, w/o the tabs for alignment. Slide the hand guard on and level it, then maybe add a set screw or two to help keep it from rotating. . .

Re: Machinist Help?

I put one of those on a rifle yesterday. I don't think they would hold up the way you would want to mount it.

That rail, towards the left you will see some hex screws in the body, what I was saying is you could replace the ring right there with an adapter so you could mount it like a recoil lug between the action and the barrel nut and have a very secure, square hold of the rail.

Re: Machinist Help?

Oh I see what you are getting at. I had not thought of mounting it between the recoil lug and the barrel nut. . . Hmmm. . .

What advantage do you see placing it there over directly to a modified barrel nut?

Re: Machinist Help?

A more secure hold an not having to worry about it coming loose after several hundred rounds or just from handling it. And it would be a lot easier to get it squared up and staying square to the action since you plan on mounting your optic to it.
