AR Comp super dirty

garandman

Bolt Gun Bodacious
I searched the forum and even called Alliant for any solutions. Found none.

Anyone use AR Comp propellant?

I find its about the dirtiest powder I've ever used and takes forever to clean.

Alliant suggested a foaming bore cleaner. (i.e. Gunslick)

Anyone got any "magic bullets" for cleaning the stuff, cuz It groups really right.

Thanx.

It's the decoppering agent. Stop trying to clean it out. It works better.

I'm not sure how you are cleaning but my AR Comp barrels have no copper to clean to speak of. The carbon is about 4 patches.

Boretech Elminator cleans my barrels

After 100 rounds.

This a series of patches with no brushing. The carbon was out after about 5 patches without a brush. This is just wet patches with Boretech Elininator. A brush goes faster.

There was only one blue patch. This is not a new barrel either.

R16 and AR Comp are both Bofurs TZ powders and they are my main powders (and Lt32).

I shoot Tubb Dust in my Lt32 and Tubb told me to stop cleaning it out so much and it will lower fouling. He was right. I know this is heresy on this forum. I have been quite pleased with my findings since following Tubbs advice.

I've been using AR-Comp a lot lately and it cleans up my Krieger SS barrel rather easy for me using some Hopp's initially then Wipe-Out and finally Hopp's again with a patched brush.

With over 2100 rounds down my barrel and 180 rounds of AR-Comp since I last cleaned, this is what the bore looks like (in case you haven't seen the likes before):

Your bore pictures are incredible. I love them!!

I bet it was still grouping too :)

Thanx !! Gonna try this.

I find the decoppering agent in AR comp and R16 works quite well.

Decoppering agent does not seem to appeal to the benchest crowd that believe their barrels must be spotlessly cleaned every 20 rounds to perform. Since it has a very similar appearance to carbon.

Cleaning an AR is a very simple process made easy because of the material used. I spray everything with break cleaner and then wash it with a hose, wipe it down and after drying, apply oil.

This.

Carb cleaner is the poop!!
Brake cleaner or Carb cleaner? I use both my the shop...… on my firearms bench I'd be a little concerned with Carb cleaner over-spray damage to sensitive materials in the surrounding area as it's a pretty 'hot' solvent.

Exactly. It is. Not for use around you nice wood and fancy paint

Straightshooter1, if you look closely, you have copper under the carbon or what ever...

About 10 layers of that stuff and you are in trouble...perhaps a cleaning with Flitz bore solvent is in order?

So far, that's hasn't been my experience. And I've cleaned that bore out really well before hand.

One other thing I was surprised about was not seeing a black carbon ring (see first pic) like I got with Varget (see second pic). If the grey is just a layer on top of black carbon, I think I'll try and swab that off and see what's underneath. But it doesn't look like much of any carbon ring has formed at this point.

I've been able to get a very clean bore with Wipe-Out and Hoppe's. The Krieger SS barrel looks really nice when cleaned to being bright and shinny. :)

Is it the regular Hoppe's #9 or the BR version of Hoppe's with copper remover agents you guys are referring to here??
