AR bolt carrier cam pin fit

I have question as to the correct positioning of the cam pin/bolt/carrier fit. I have never paid any attention to this until I started reading through reviews on different bolt carrier groups over the winter and I came across some random information that I cannot confirm or disprove.

When the BCG is taken apart and you are going back together with it, with the bolt pushed as far into the carrier as it will go, should the cam pin then fit into it's hole in the bolt or is it "required and correct" that you pull the bolt out a little for the hole to line up?

I have messed around with these rifles for quite a few years but have never gotten any formal let alone knowledgeable training on them.

Jason,

The bolt cam pin will fit into the bolt carrier and bolt when the bolt is in the most rearward position and then must be rotated 90° so that it can get past the gas key.

J, is it a serious problem then, when the bolt goes back into the carrier too far to get the came pin in unless you pull the bolt out a little bit?

I doubt it.Try the cam pin in your bolt out of the carrier and see if its real sloppy,if it isnt riduculous then you are fine. It all depends on whose parts or culmination of parts you are using.

They fit the bolt pretty good no slop. The one that made me finally ask the question is a 308 BCG from Rainier Arms. I have no idea who makes it for them but it's the nib coated unit they sell. Measuring from the lugs to the carrier face there is .050" difference with the pin in and then removed with the bolt as far in the carrier as it will go.
