What is all this pre ban/post ban stuff about?

Here's some data from an AR site:

The 1994 Assault Weapons Ban banned a list of specific rifles from importation/sale, including such guns as the Mac10 and the Striker shotgun.

It also banned guns based on certain 'features'. Per the law, a gun may not have more than TWO of the following features and still be legal:

-bayonet lug
-pistol grip
-colapsible stock
-flash hider
-removable magazine
-grenade launcher

The ban sunsetted I believe it was last year or the year before so technically the ban is not in effect. I believe that the post ban period was referred to as the period during the ban, I may be wrong on this cause I would consider this as the post,after) ban period.

Almost all ARs I have seen on the shelves have 3 or more of these features now, most common 1)pistol grip, 2) colapsible stock and 3) removable magazine. There was also ban on high capicity magazines so they could not be manufactured after the ban went into effect. That was solved by manufactures working day and night to beat the ban deadline. I guess thats why you can find the high capicity mags for sale for $9.95 or so not that they are any good.

What I don't understand is why there are so many AK-47s on the market did they miss the ban somehow or were they all imported before 1994?

The reason so many AKM's are on the market is they have the proper number of US parts to clasify them as US guns.
