AR 15 scope mounting

I am purchasing a Rock River Varminter flattop in 223. I have decided I want to keep a brass catcher on it at all times. My usual problem with AR's is getting the scope mounted forward enough. Escecially since I like higher powered scopes.

The brass catcher is from 3 Bucc http://www.brownells.com/.aspx/sid=6119/pid=1541/sku/AR_15_AR_10_Flat_Top_Brass_Catcher_Bl ack

I was leaning tward the LaRue SPR / M4 Scope Mount QD LT-104, but I am not sure if it will fit. The brass catcher needs to be in the most forward spot of the flat top rail so it will line up with the ejection port. I was wondering if any mounts will attach on the flattop rail and extend over and beyond the attachment mount for the brass catcher. ( I hope I explained that well). I will be mounting a Nightforce Benchrest 12-42x56 30mm tube. I also have a Nikon Monarch 6-20x44 1 in tube I can use if needed.

Thank you very much for the help!!!

BLS, if I understand your question, you are looking to move the scope rings forward. Take a look at the "scout rail" from GG&G.
http://www.gggaz.com/index.php?cat=55&parents=38 I use the scout on my RRA A4 varmint with the 3BUCC catcher, works great. pdog2225

I cannot speak about the addition of the brass catcher, but +1 for the GG&G rail. I have one on a flatop RRA, and it allows the proper eye relief with a Leupold VXIII. For what you have described, I think it will work well for you too. Let us know what you decide.

I also have the 3BUCC brass catcher (works great) and 2 rail mounts so I can swap the bag between two uppers. I also use the GG&G GS-1 rail. http://www.gggaz.com/index.php?id=151&parents=38,55
Not sure what all the differences between this and the Scout rail are but the arrangement I have works well. The scopes are Lupy VX-III 6-24x's.
Because I have long arms & neck I also used a BS-20 buttstock extender - http://www.gunaccessories.com/AR15-M16Parts/ButtstocksAssemblies.asp (scroll down a little past half way)

and a 1" buttpad - http://www.riflestock.com/catalog_page_detail.cfm?recordno=1&Product_CatalogID=2913&ProductNumber=16%2D09%2D02&ProductCode=38&ProductSubCodeID=207&NewProduct=0

The whole arrangement fits me well.

My last hog hunt worked fine with a .223. We did have a .308 win available. Bullet selection is more important than caliber. I prefer my DPMS LAR .243 win with partitions or a solid

Looks like the GS-1 is even longer than the scout rail (looks like 7 additional Picatinny slots ahead of the upper vs. 4).

I have a LaRue LT-104 and it probably would not work how you'd want with the 3BUCC brass catcher. My scope (IOR 2.5-10x44) is already pushed as far forward as possible on the LT-104 to still allow the rear of the scope's ocular being about 1/4" behind the back of the charging handle. If I moved the LT-104 two slots back to allow the 3BUCC to be mounted, the scope would be too far back by about 1/2-3/4".

However, it would probably work with the LaRue LT-139 which moves the scope even further forward.

Thank you ALL for the help! Scope mounting on an AR is always tougher for me then a bolt rifle.

It looks like the GS-1 Optical Mounting Rail is the farthest forward as nhm16 said.

I was worried the 3BUCC brass catcher would be too high on that rail? It looks like a few of you use it with out any problems.... I think that's the way to go because then I would use whatever rings/height I wanted.

What do you all think? Will that work?

Bob,

The two flat top uppers I have are a RRA (.223) and DPMS Lo-Pro (.20 Practical). I have the GS-1 on both and use the 3BUCC on both. The only time I lose any cases is when I forget to put the bag on!

You're good to go.

I know it's been a while since my original posting I decided on a DPMS 20" Bull with JP trigger because I am getting a GOOD deal on it. Tonight I ordered the 3 Bucc brass catcher, Ergo grip, and (4) 20 round Brownells sticks.

I like high powered scopes like my Nightforce 12-42 BR but I don't think this set up needs that kind of power. I want something with low end power because it may claim a few coyotes. I have an extra Nikon Buckmaster 4-14x40 so that will get mounted for now.

I'm debating if I should just order the GG&G rail now or not. I'm almost sure I will need the extra eye relief, but not positive.
