AR-15 Competition rear sight apertures

As I am new this year to service rifle competition, and am shooting an AR, which Rear sight Apertures are recommended for 100, 200, 300, 500, and possibly 600? I'm looking at DPMS .050 and DPMS .046. I have good eyes and will most likely be shooting on open (no tree cover) ranges.

How about NM front sight posts, DPMS NM .050 round or Armalite NM Square?

Lastly anyone have any experience with Sinclair's Biothane Service Rifle slings? Good/bad?

Thanks,
~260

Apertures - Get some in .038, .042 and .046. 42 seems to be the most popular.

Definitely get the squared posts. .052 is the most popular, but again try smaller and larger sizes. Some really like .072 posts; I hate them. I feel the same about .062 posts. You may want to try a .046 post too.

Never tried the Sinclair Biothane, but I have a Turner. If you like leather 1907 slings, you will probably like the Biothane version.

Spend a few extra dollars and get the whole array of sizes of apertures and front posts. Everyone will have a preference and you will too. Experiment until you find what works best. Having a easily replaceable rear aperture can be very useful when you show up for a match and it's dark and overcast instead of sunny like you expected...

I do not like the biothane slings. They do not flex or give at all. The regular Turner leather slings are good but the best I have found is by John Weller. Again, it's a personal preference and yours may differ. I do occasionally see SR shooters using the biothane slings and some like them.

Good luck,
Erik

Agreed you should get a few rear Apuratures. Like Beau says you most likely use the .042 or .036 since you have good vision. Too Small is bad, but too big you can still get by.. just a thought. If you are shootng and you think lint got in the rear sight or a spider web is in there thats too small, its not lint.

If you wear glasses or saftey glasses get the short hood if you have long arms and neck the long hoods will eat up a pair of glasses in just afew months.

I shoot a .072 front square post and like it. Most dont. Those are cheap so you may want to get a couple. Get a front sight smoker ( carbide lamp) yes it matters.
I also hear alot guys Hate the Biothane again I love mine but i never learned the right way to put on a service rifle sling and always struggled with my bassackwards set up until I got the biothane. It WILL NOT SLIP so it works for me. +1 on the weller as well.

I use a Bob Jones aperture kit and really like it. http://www.bjonessights.com/AR15.html is the address. As for slings, I use a web sling in off hand and a fairly screwy method of attaching the M1907 sling as a "no pulse". But my Les Tam should be arriving in a couple of months and I'm really looking forward to trying that. Never used a biothane but do have a friend who uses one; it appears to be good for the non-slip, but is almost too sticky. Sometimes he can't seem to get it off.

Just saw this. Standard rear is .040 which works well with good vision. I had AMU ream an .038 aperature and it worked better for me. I use an .062 front post since it gives a good sight picture for me and doesn't cause eye strain toward the end of a long shooting day. You may want to take a look at what White Oak Precision offers. Avoid the bio-thane sling, they can he difficult to adjust and go with a good leather sling.

260,

Your rear sight on the service rifle is about the most important part of the rifle. As far as the sling, some folks like the biothane, but I hate them with a passion because they are like trying to adjust bubble gum on your arm. I have several Weller slings in Latino leather which are second to none hands down. I have used the same one on my service rifle for the last 12 years.
There are major improvements to be made on the rear sight in order to ensure its repeatability here is arguably the best solution:

I have 1/4 moa sight on my civilian guns, but have been very successful with 1/2 moa sights while shooting on a military team.
