AR 15 Build 223 Wylde

So, I have finally decided to finish a long-lost project. Even though I dislike the rifle, (AR15) I want to finish it out for when my grandson comes to visit. I would like a 20" barrel and think about the $250, max, for the barrel. Any thoughts on Stoner barrels as the reviews are all over the place? I know, pay once cry once but, this rifle will spend many months in the safe. I just want it to be accurate and if I have to pay a little more for a good barrel...

Ive yet to have a Stoner or BCA barrel that was crud.
All shoot right at .500-.750 at 100yds.
Priced right, shoot great in all my ar15 builds, bought in 223, 6.5 grendel calibers.

I've had 3 AR Stoners and 4 BCA's.
1 of the AR Stoners was great [< 3/4 MOA] and two of the BCA were great [<3/4 MOA]. The other two AR Stoners and the other two BCA were > 1 1/4MOA.
FYI. Both Midway and BCA were great in refunding the ones that didn't shoot well.

The stoners I have seen was only 2. They were hammers. One was a 22 Nosler and the other a 6.5 grendel. The Nosler would shoot with any bolt gun

FWIW, my first 2 AR uppers (20 years ago) had Wilson barrels (1:8) chambered in 223 Wylde. Both were from Rock River. The first was a 22" heavy barrel that shoots everything from 40gr to 75gr bullets very well with several sub 1/2 moa groups. The 2nd was on a 20" service rifle upper that I used to take 1st place (Service Rifle) in the 2004 Indiana state championship match. I still have both. Haven't shot the service rifle upper in at least 15 years. I took the 22" upper out to Wyoming in 2001 on a PD hunt. It's still shooting extremely well.

WOA Wilson 1/7 -or 1/8 twist 20" all day for your budget. I think we have a trend here for WOA recommendations. Most of us knuckle dragger XTC Service rifle guys say :)

A 20" barrel on an AR upper is no fun to lug around in the field. A 16" barrel is adequate for deer out to 200yds with proper bullet placement (and a good projectile). Though I think the owners of the company suck, a Bear Creek barrel will usually shoot good enough to give killing accuracy to 200yds. There are others that will suffice for well under $200. The Wylde or NATO chamber will work fine. I bought a pencil profile M4 NATO chambered barrel at Primary Arms that will group inside 1MOA with handloaded ammo and it gives sub 2MOA with Federal Fusion hunting ammo. That is reasonable hunting accuracy IMHO. The weight without the optic is 7# and that is another consideration.Looter Shooter.jpg

Get a good barrel. The problem with cheap barrels is consistency. Some will shoot fine, others will be crap. Ammo and range time is too expensive to be dicking around cheap ones to find the "one load" that will shoot OK.

WOA is a good choice. PRI, Centurion, and Craddock RTR are also very good. Besides a 20", a 18" rifle gas in a SPR/MK12 contour is also another great profile to consider. They tend to be quite soft shooting.
Despite their moderate cost many of the barrels turned on a Wilson blank can shoot very well. I had a 18" Nordic rifle gas 1/8 twist on a Wilson blank and it shot extremely well. I lamented the day it was finally shot out.

I have a Wilson Combat in .223 Wylde. 20” barrel. Shoots very small. Don’t like AR’s as much as bolts but the AR’s with a good quality barrel will really surprise you.
