AR-10 - .308

300 RUM

Gene Nowaczyk
Is it common that the neck of the casing get dinged up on ejection on a .308 out of an AR-10? I'm getting cases back with the neck dinged up.

I ran a few controlled tests to see if the case is just banging into things. I put some dykem on a few necks, marking the ejector side and found the big dings are on the ejector side. Also removed the BCG placed a case into the bolt let let her fly into the vice guess what dinged it big time.
I was just concerned because the dings are fairly large.

The dings are common to the AR family of weapons, the 308's are a little harder on brass than the 223's, consider a adjustable gas block, and a flat wire recoil spring, slowing down the bolt carrier will help with accuracy and extend the life of the brass.

Before I paid big money for an adjustable gas block, I would order several ejector springs and corresponding roll-pins. Cost you maybe $4. Got a roll-pin drift? Get one from Brownells in 1/16 and drive out your ejector pin being sure to cover the ejector w/thumb when you bull the drift out of the bolt.

Not really any need for a very stout ejector, try cutting one of your several springs down so the ejector can be pushed in with finger pressure but still has enough spring to get case outa the port.

Easier to recover your brass when it only flips couple feet away in a neat pile. Might also look at your ejector spring and if you have the o-ring that keeps it centered. You are cleaning your ejector from time to time, aren't you?

Easy to tune for brass longevity. Of course if you have a carbine gas system it will be more violent and may need these tune-ups plus a tunable gas port..

Hogan, wonderful idea!!! My ejector springs is very very heavy, not only dinging a little but almost .060 ding! Oh and flying brass, about 10ft or more behind me. I went and shot my break in procedure yesterday (25rds loaded from 2/3 load to full load) and all my cases are beaten up pretty bad almost to the point of no good anymore, in fact I may not use them for anything other plinking.

Hogan,
Thanks again for the great idea. I took two (2) cuts of the ejector spring, first cut was an exact .125 (still felt a bit stiff) and then another at .080 (this did the trick), these measurements are in length of course. Then set my adj gas block to where it just starts to impinge the gas flow, loaded three(3)in the mag and let'em fly. I'm now dumping them at 4 O-clock 5ft away.

Thanks again
