AR 10 308 1x10" 20" brownel's pencil barrel

Reloaded for 52 years hardest gun I ever dealt with. Tried a bull barrel and the pencil barrel from Brownel's. I reloaded every way I can think of to get this gun to shoot better. Today the best was 5 into 2" at 100'. I body sized once Federal and Winchester brass and then Lee neck sized them. Using 165 Sierra Gamekings, Hornady SST 165, Nosler 165, Remington 180, and so on it goes. I got 2 different bolt carriers, a new JP bolt and a DPMS as well. I even use service rifle load data for A2520, Varget, A Tac, H4895, on it goes, seated to 2.800 and closer didn't do much good. Good Leoupold 12 x scope that works fine on other guns. Different primers not much change. Put the barrels on and of more than once to make sure they where on correct. Torked to Brownel's specs. I've put together about 6 AR 15 out of parts and barrels and all shot under an inch. Then I tried to do this AR 10 in 308 and what a nightmare to try and get it to shoot. Changed the weight in the buffer also. Same loads in a bolt action deer gun shot just fine. I don't know what to do with this thing anymore. I think I got a female gun?????? Any help will be great. Sorry ladies no offence intended just a man way of thinking.....

Upper/lower fitment. Gas tube clearance, hand guard/gas block clearance. Can you shut the gas off, hand cycle shoot a group for comparison? Otherwise barrel/trigger/shooter are the usual suspects.

I have checked and double checked all that. I can shot it o.k. the trigger has some work to make it lighter. I can shoot my 22/250 5 shots into .200 with the Criterian barrel I put on myself... Not a great shooter, but not the worst either. Just total'y confused as to what to do or try next.

Maybe it's time to break out the old borescope and see what's going on inside. You wouldn't be the first person to get a bad barrel. Good luck with your project.

AR10's are notoriously difficult to get to shoot well.

If you want an AR10 to shoot, it really needs a quality barrel. Krieger makes one that they generally keep in stock.

Think of it like this…..when shooting a revolver you “ride” the recoil but when shooting an automatic you resists the recoil or there’s a good chance the gun will jam, AR’s are like that you have to resist the recoil and do it the same way every shot…….

If you build an budget AR10 then you can expect budget performance. You have to have reasonable expectations. An inexpensive mass produced AR barrel is minute of man. Yes, there are rare exceptions, but in general these of not precision crafted components. The recoil of a .308 in AR10 is going to amplify any loose fits and poorly matched mating surfaces. It will also test how secure your scope is mounted.

Check everything, including that your muzzle device is tight. If still having issues then consider investing $500 on a better barrel. Don't waste your time with a pencil barrel profile, which gets whippy after only a couple of shots especially since you're bringing a 10-rnd or 20-rnd magazine to the party.

Good Luck!
