Applying for Gunsmithing School

Working up loads for new Shilen 308win
I'm an older student applying to an NRA approved gunsmithing school in Oklahoma. I have visited and I'm very impressed.

I would appreciate any input from graduates and experienced gunsmiths in starting the program in Tishomingo, Ok. What books should I read? What projects are the best for learning beginner and advanced techniques?

good luck with your studies. i believe they will give you all the material you will need. after your educated and you start gunsmithing it will be up to you to teach yourself. that's when the learning really begins. remember there is more to gunsmithing then fixing guns.i hope you do well. www.therifler.com

I appreciate the comments. I know the school will be supportive. It is a good choice for older students who have experienced Age Discrimination, as we are sufficiently self motivated to make a go of it.

you have the right attitude. all the gun builders out there tough to find someone that does general repairs .factory repair shops get really backed up. mike

It is a real tough business. And easy to get over extended financially and behind on work.

Small business classes or a good mentor is as important as the skill.

Many great gunsmiths suck at finances and many bad gunsmiths are great at marketing and not so good on the work side .

I appreciate all the supportive comments. I have been accepted to the school and waiting for acceptance to the program. I am very eager to start learning and would appreciate any great books on the topic.
I know there is an additional year for advanced training, and several classes from manufacturers. I want to take them all, if I can.

Gunsmithing is not a glamorous career . It's very expensive to start , heavy on the paperwork , long on the hours of boring but money making jobs . Some times it takes 3-5 years to make it out of the red .
12-14 hr days are fairly common starting off , and let's not forget the insurance , taxes , rent , electric and Uncle Sam .
Good luck

GOOD LUCK I DID IT BACK 2005 AND I ENJOYED AND STILL ENJOY IT TODAY BUT EXPENSIVE TAXS,TOOLS.EQUIPMENT.LIC'S.ETC !!!!!!!!
