Anyone using Ed's Red bore cleaner?

So as not to hijack another thread ("Cleaning Bores To Bare Metal - Is It Worth It?"), I thought I would ask this in a new one.

I was intrigued by a reply to the above mentioned thread that included a link to homemade firearm cleaning products. I was curious if anyone here has tried any of these, such as Ed's Red. How's it work? Here is the link. http://www.frfrogspad.com/homemade.htm

archerross,

I`ve been using it for more than 10 years for my 1903 Springfields that are used with cast bullets only. It works pretty well with Mil-Surp rifles with neglected bores as well as shotguns with stubborn fouling that resist other bore cleaners. But it is not a "do all" solvent...

It will not remove copper fouling.

I`ve migrated to using one of the bore foams for general purpose as it takes care of copper fouling too. (Less scrubbing) I still use it for long term storage of rifles, as the ATF component serves as a very good barrier to ambient moisture.

When mixed as a quart per component, a gallon of Ed`s Red will last a long time.

I have donated many "samples" locally, and have yet to hear that it did not work as described.

HTH?

Agree 100% with STP I use it for a general cleaner, great for cast bullets a lot of times I'll use it to remove most of the heavy fouling for the first couple of patches even let it set over night. If you need to remove hard carbon fouling or copper you need a more aggressive cleaner. You can make a lot of it cheap and thats a good thing if you do a lot of cast bullet shooting.

ME! i shoot my guns and a lot of my friends...working up loads for them. i use a lot of cleaner and stumbled upon ed's red a few months age. i mix and use it almost daily. adding the lanolin will thicken it a bit...adjust the lanolin for the thickness you like. in the winter, however, the stuff will congeal if you add to much lanolin. warm it in warm water and it liquifies. the chemicacls used are real solvents and therefore FLAMMABLE. NO gas heaters any where nearby. the pilot light of a water heater could ignite the fumes if you use it in a nonventilated area. too many have been severely burned while using flammable solvents cleaning in a closed garage with open flames nearby. ABSOLUTELY no smoking while using ed's...i'm not a lawyer but this sounds like a lawyer proof warning. [/quote] if i can see you, i can touch you. BANG!

Thanks for the replies so far. It sounds like a very good GP cleaner and storage product. I'll likely mix up a batch and use it in conjunction with a good copper remover in my 6.5-284. If there are more of you out there using this, I'd still like to hear what you have to say about its effectiveness.

great cheap general purpose solvent. I also have it in a cheap Harbor Freight Ultrasonic cleaner that I throw AR 15 bolt parts in to remove the carbon that accumulates in them.
