Anyone using 60 or 70gr bullets in a 220 Swift?

What powders are giving you your best results?

Any chronograph data or other you'd like to share would be appreciated too. Thanks in advance. WD

Try WW 760 or H 414. 39.5 gr under Winchester 64gr power point 3/4 inch groups or less with my Swift on a good day. This is a great hunting bullet.

If you are contemplating using 60-70 weight class bullets in your Swift, I would recommend a 12 twist barrel to stabilize them. A factory 14 twist probably won't get it done. My new build Krieger 12 twist 29 inch barrel chambered in .220 Weatherby Rocket with .257 no turn neck for Norma brass I set up for 60 -65 class Hornady and Sierra bullets, but I found out that my favorite varmint bullet at 4300 FPS the venerable 55 grain Nosler BT performs very well so i canned the heavier bullets and am driving these 55's well and smiling the whole way! :)

Howdy !

Apples and oranges...

My .22-35 wildcat has less case capacity than a .220 Swift, but more than a
.22-250.

I have read many .220 Swift shooter's loads that contained less powder than
what I shot in the .22-35.

From a 28" SS K & P 1-8 5-groove, my math showed use of a 75 "A"-Max as the best "one bullet" solution for ALL ranges out to 1,000.

For 500 and inside, a good argument could be made for use of the Sierra .224" calibre 65gr SPBT, in-lieu of heavier .224s.
Useable " flatness " is there, and so is adequate KE for clean kills on things like groundhogs.

IMHO, .224" cal bullet weights in the 68-70gr zone; are an artifact of the
.223/AR experience; and exist more for that discipline; than ever having been
taylor-made for the large capacity .224s. But hey, that's just MHO.

If you should select and use some of those weights, please do let us know how things turn out.

Best of luck in your endeavors !

Oops... I forgot...

Powders:

For 55s I used WW760 and VV160 ( 24" barrel )

For 60s - 65s, IMR 4350

For 75 "A"-Max AA3100 ( 28" barrel )

VV560 really required heavy/heaviest bullets to start to perk, but never equalled use of VV160 in any respect.

H414 is basically just re-cannistered WW760.

D85 surplus might be one powder to try, if'n you don't mind use of ball powder. It strikes me ( in a .224" cal cartridge of the case capacity mentioned ) to be " ball 4350 ".

Powders on the slower end of the burn rate scale, offer best opportunity for high/highest load densities. In nearly all instances, my best results/successes were from use of high load density cartridges.... those between 97 & 100 %.

Hey, 357Mag! What is a 22-35?
Ever since the 90gr. .22's came out I've been intrigued with using them in a high-cap case. Is there any data out there on such an animal!
I have a friend who campaigned a 220 Imp using 80gr bullets @ 1000yds a few years ago and he was very successful with it. The only problem he experienced was shortened barrel life.
