Curious as to how this may work. Interested in loads and twist rate for 20"-22" barrel.

Have most of the parts except a barrel.

Have a couple decent bolt guns and M1-A's in .308, interested in experimenting with something new in .308 for 300-600 yd. plates.

Please, no "ya need a 6.5CM" replies. My 6.5x47L satisfies my 6.5 fetish.

AR-10s have been competing in 800-1000 yd. Palma Service Rifle competition for some time using 155s. Not many but Service Rifle shooters are using them plus AR-15s as well. I would use a 12"-11" twist at least with the shorter barrel. Varget is the go-to powder or IMR or H4895 if cycling is spotty or if for your M1A (not that it matters as Mid and Long Range competitions are single loading only). An adjustable gas block would be invaluable.

Can't say I've seen anyone shooting ar-10s succeusfully at 1000 with a 155 and a 20-22" barrel in High-Power. Us Palma shooters are using 30" or longer barrels to get the 155s to a velocity that will stay supersonic at 1000 (usually around 2950 fps at least, and a lot of us are at 3050 or more.)

When I was still shooting service rifle, I shot an AR-10 with a 20" barrel for Palma and Long-range, and would use 175s up to 900, and 185s for 1000. Myself and a couple others had trouble keeping the 175 supersonic at 1000. It can be done...but you're destroying brass and blowing primers to do it. Switched to Berger 185s and problem solved. 155s will work okay at 600 yards, but I wouldn't want to be pulling your targets if you're trying to get them to 1000 in that short of a barrel.

Varget is the go to, but I've also had some success with RE-15, H4895, IMR4064. AR-Comp is okay for the 155s. My 20" AR-10 was a 1:10 twist, and liked the 175/185 bullets. Again, I think that twist and barrel length might be agressive for the 155s. A lot of us shoot 1:12 or 1-13 for the 155s in our 30"+ Palma guns.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

My range only extends to 500yds, and have used 2155/2156 Sierras over both Varget and 8208 very successfully in a 1:11.25 Schneider barreled AR10. As noted, there are better choices to go long, but have significant inventory of both the Sierras and a range limitation, inside of which they work very well.

Agree that it is not the best platform for Palma. Just saying there are folks doing it as it is their only competitive long gun.
