anyone used BSA Tactical scope???

im thinkin of trying this scope out just because its so darn cheap. but i was hoping i could get some imput from someone who had used one.

sportsmansguide is the only one that i know who carries this scope. i want to try one out for longer range shooting, not sure if i should try the 25x or the 32X). but obviously im skeptical because of the price. im thinkin i may just find myself looking at a thick mirage...

im also looking at a leupold mark 4. but anything over 10X is really pricy, and i dont think 10x is enough for medium range stuff. i guess i could get the mark 4 for closer range stuff and just have target knobs put on my my leupold 6.5-20x40LR VH for the longer range stuff.

anyone have any suggestions......

Just me speaking from my limited experience on the range. My experience with BSA scopes has indicated them to be less than hoped for by most shooters. Clarity and brightness was just lacking. I believe you get what you pay for and this low price is indicative of this scope's quality.

If you want a low cost scope that I have had very good experience with, you might try to find a Simmons 44 Mag scope in 6.5x20 power. They are discontinued but are still available in some sources for around $100 with mil-dot reticles. Here is the website address: www.natchezss.com/product.cfm?contentID=productDetail&prodID=SN801056

I shoot 2 of these on my silhouette 10/22's and they repeat, have target nobs, adjust way down to about 15 feet, and have GREAT clarity. ,FYI, they are made in the Phillipines for whatever that is worth.)

Friday night I inadvertently dropped my rifle about 2 feet onto my uncarpeted kitchen floor after cleaning it. It hit directly on the elevation turret. No damage that I can find visually or function wise, but elevation changed about 2.5 moa downward. Resighted it in Saturday and won the Match with a 34/40 score,!/2 scale).

Good shooting,
George

well i figure that the clearity wouldnt be very good. and thats kinda what a long range scope is for right? its just that i hate AOs since my leupold has the SF. i kinda wish i had gotten the target knobs with the fine duplex insead of the short knobs and varmint reticle.

and speaking of the phillipines....ive seen some leupold mark IV clones, made in china or somewhere) on ebay. and i just read an article in a magazine about how these respected companies have turned to china and other cheaper countries and taught them how to make quality optics, at a cheaper cost of course. so im wondering if these mark 4 clones would be any good. they look exactly like the real thing. but i cant find any of those with any more power than 10x. but at the price, a guy could get one, and if it wasnt up to par, it could just be used on .22 or something....

Rat,

,1) BSA is not a good choice. Five years ago, I had a similar 6-24x44 with target turrets, made in Japan). It was much better than their Chinese junk, but not good enough to keep. Optics were blurry and the tracking was always iffy.

,2) You do NOT need a lot of magnification to shoot at long range, especially if it's a "tactical" match.

,3) You DO need precise, repeatable tracking. Good "clicks" are the most important thing to look for.

,4) Unless you can afford a Nightforce NXS you can't get good clicks AND good high-power optics. So, if you're on a budget, go for good clicks and less magnification,20X tops).

,5) The best cheap scope that I've used for long-range shooting is a 4-14x40 Weaver Grand Slam, currently $385 at SWFA). The Grand Slam has the Weaver "Micro-trac" adjustment system, which is the same system used in the 36X scopes favored by many benchrest shooters. The clicks have a wonderfully light and precise feel. They are very positive with no slop or backlash. In my experience the tracking has been absolutely perfect.

I've shot my 14X Grand Slam in many matches out to 1000 yards and never felt that the scope was the limiting factor. It doesn't have target turrets, so you do need to be organized and methodical to not loose track of which revolution you are on. But then, if you are going to shoot successfully at 1000 yards, you need to be pretty organized anyway, so this isn't a big deal.

I'm being forced by hearing problems to cut way back on my shooting and my scope is currently without a rifle. If you want to buy it, I'll sell it to you for $240, including shipping,CONUS only).

,6) Other moderately priced scopes to consider include a Bushnell 4200 or the new Burris tactical scope.

,7) Next step up would be a Nikon tactical, Zeiss Conquest, or the Leupold 3.5-10x40 or 4.5-14x50. With Leupolds, you either love 'em or you don't.,And if you decide you don't love it, they're pretty easy to sell.)

That's my 2-cents worth. Good luck,

Lefty.

hey guys, what do you think of the barska 8-32x44 tactical, and the nikon buckmasters 6-18x40 SF????? i know the nikon is nice for the price, but ive never heard anything about the barska tactical....

I had one of those POS BSA's in a 32 power one time, and unless you had a flashlight and it was high noon you could not see much looking through it.
If your on a tight budget check out the Simmons......
