Anyone shooting the New Sierra 30 Cal. 230 gr. - what twist rate are you using ?

Looking to test these but I want to be sure that what I have will work. And I don’t want to have a bunch of “left-overs” if a 1-9” twist doesn’t work. - I know Sierra recommends a 1-8” twist according to their web-site. I’ve found that in some cases a slower twist rate still works (probably sacrificing a bit of the B/C). - Planning to try them in a 30-378 Wby that has a 34” 1-9” twist rate.

Looking for actual experience if possible for those who have tried / tested them.

Thanks, - Ron -

Well I used to shoot there 240gr. in a 10 twist 308 Baer! They shot very well, but now I'm shooting 300 WSM with Berger 210 VLD!
There is no reason 1-9 twist wouldn't work. Don't understand why everyone keeps going to a faster twist than what they really need.
Maybe some of the real experts can chime in on the twist deal, I've never had problem at 1000 yards using 1-10 twist with an bullet.

Agree Joe, - I've run the 240's as well in a 10" twist.
I don't want to buy a box of 50 bullets to try them & not have them work. - IF I'm going to buy them I'm getting at least a box of 500. - I shoot the 230 gr. Berger & wonder if I'm wasting time on the Sierra's.
(trying to re-invent the wheel over an advertised B/C number).

Thanks Joe !!

I am testing them in a 9.5 twist . 300 wsm. I am shooting them to 2840. I have shot them at 2890 but recoil is too much. They are showing promise but i have not shot them at a match yet. I have done a powder and a seating depth test. I will shoot them at a club match in a couple of weeks. I'l let you know how they do. I also have not shot them past 100 yards yet. I need to do a tuner test to finalize the load.

I believe it is because we are shooting farther and farther now. Spin decay is an issue at long range-throws off stability and BC but I'm sure you know that. Marginal stability (SG) going into trans (~1339 fps) will almost guarantee problems and massive accuracy issues. A faster twist doesn't guarantee a safe passage through transonic into subsonic accurately but the higher SG gives you a better and more accurate chance of getting to your target at ELR.

9 twist works great with 230s. I think my buddy runs them at 2925 from his 300 NM. At least that is where his accuracy is. They do great out to 800 with his 2925 fps in a 300 NM.
