Anyone shoot a fast twist 22BR?

I've owned a few 22 BR 1-14 twist barrels set up for the light 22 caliber bullets. I was pleased with both accuracy and speed. I'm wondering if anyone here has first hand experience with a 22BR in 1-7 or 1-8 twist with the 75 to 80 grain bullet range?

Since the 6BR does so well with the heavier bullets, I am thinking about trying a 22BR set up for the 77 SMK or equivalent custom bullet.

When I first heard about the 77 grain Sierra bullet being shot in the .223 Remington, I thought that would never work. Man, was I wrong. I've had a custom 700 and a RRA AR-15 that were amazingly accurate with that bullet.

Would appreciate any advice or experience that anyone can share.

Thanks, critter_bill

Not a 22BR, but I've shot a 22 Dasher with 80gr Hornady Amaxs. Very, very accurate and it was going 3350 fps with a FULL case of H4350.

Ballistics are about the same at 600 yards as 105 VLDs shot by a 6BR. However, the trajectory is much flatter. For a varmint round, I'd take the 22 Dasher over the 6BR for that reason... if barrel life was not an issue.

I trashed a 14 twist 22 Dasher barrel in 1800 rounds shooting prairie dogs. Last time for that experiment.

I have a 1/9 22BR. It shoots the 69gr SMKs extremely well and the 77SMK and 75AMax not much worse. With the 75s it is one of the guns that goes out to South Dakota for prairie dogs.

Thanks, guys, for the responses. Although I still want another 1-14' Krieger barrel, I'm leaning toward a 1-8' twist as well.

I sold my Hall S with,3) 22BR barrels last year because I wanted to build on BATs. I've missed that rifle ever since I sold it and hope to duplicate it on a BAT B action. It will be a few months before I get the barrels but I will report my results when available.

Thanks again. critter_bill

Hi, I have a 22BR with a 30' hart 1:8 twist shooting 80g VLD's 31.5g VV150 CCI450 primers 10th in to lands for 3200 fps.
Awsom, I can beat or hold my own from 300 to 600 mts against most of the heavy hitters in my club, but 700 + if the wind comes up all over, I'm just building a 6.5 for long stuff.

I shoot an 8 twist 22BR for varmints. About 28 gns of varget under a 75 AMAX. Not a lot of pressure and is a hammer on critters out to 500-600 yards. Further than that I use a 243.

The 22BR with JLK 90gr bullets is great fun, for a while. Less recoil, obviously, than even the 6BR with 107's: the rifle, prone stock shot F-class) barely twitched back, and the cross hairs stayed in the black of the LR target. Shot a clean Palma,LR) at Raton with it, and found that wind doping was about equal to the 6BR with 107's.
Seem to recall that H4350 worked pretty well. Varget too fast, double-based powders impressive to the chronograph but not to the calipers: 2900 to 2950fps seemed to group best. Without digging out my loading log, seem to recall H414 generating some astonishing velocities: 3200+, but leaving the bore almost too dirty to see through.
However: trouble in Paradise. At 800-odd rounds, the barrel gave up in a spectacular way. From shooting Xs only at 800 yds during a pre-match sight-in, to the next day's debacle: unable to hold the black at 800yds.
If you do your own barrel work and want a giggle: try the 22BR. If not, go to bigger bores!

I have a Salva Benchrest rifle with a lothar Walter 26 inches barrel 1:8 twist and I search loads using Vitha Vuori powders. I would like to use Sierra 80grs SMK or
Berger. I am around 2900fps with a load of 25,8grs of VV N135.

Havae a take off barrel in 22br (I dont remember the version) but its the short one. Barrel is 25" with 1-8" twist. A case full of a discontinued powder will give a bit past 3150 with the Nosler 80grCC. Just like loading a BP cartridge, fill the case level and strike it off. Accuracy is excellent. 200 yd is usully abt 1 large ragged hole--<1/2 min. Although the one match i shot at 600 didnt get me any wood it did keep a few groups around 1/2min. Wind was from 15-30 k and in switching directions. many folk had groups in the surprise!! 10-12". Dont know down range too well but makes pretty drilled holes in 5/16 mild steel plate@ 430 yd.
