Anyone reloading 22/6mm 40 degree improved?

Looking for load data. I have fire formed about 50 cases using 80 gr AMax and 46 gr of H4831. That load showed some pressure signs. It was the starting load that my gunsmith recommended max being 48.6 grs. He also suggested RL 22 42gr start 45 gr max. I plan on using 80gr SMK. The rifle is a ruger no1 barrel twist is 8.

I have one with a Bartlein 8.5tw @ 24". Berger 70VLD and 210M primers. Have loaded up to 53.5gr of H4831SC and velocity was 3740fps but groups were .8+. Had backed it down to 52.9gr for 3660fps. Still get 2 touching or near and 1 out randomly. Loaded them to 2.8" OAL to fit mag box so they had about .030 jump. Don't know the FB of my reamer as I bought it used but new and the fellow couldn't remember specs and no info marked on shank.

Can't seem to get a nice round group and random one out can either be horizontal or vertical????? About 150rds of barrel burning rounds testing and still not where I am comfortable using it for coyotes which was my reason for building it. Thought something flatter than my XC for those quick shots when you don't have time to range distance but the muzzle blast is reaching horrendous :( and recoil is more than the XC. Which was another reason for my build as I sometimes can't spot my miss so thought the lighter bullet etc would fit the bill. Stupid me didn't realize that 12 or so more grains of powder would cancel out a lighter bullet as for recoil. Had been using a 22/250AI prior with 50BT and wanted a bit more bullet weight as there is rarely a still day in northwest SD!!!!

Had a pound of RL22 for testing but my local FFL needed some for loading for a customer so gave it to him and no more anywhere close to where I am. Found some Hor 75BTHP I am going to try as the Bergers are a bit more expensive and nobody in these parts stock them. I see PV just got some in though. Was hoping I could shoot the 75Amax but OAL with my reamer came out to 2.930 and loading to mag length was too deep for the Amax.

All the info I can give you thus far.

Respectfully,
Dennis

All I ever used in any of mine way back when was RL-25, it did the best of all powders tested with the 80 gr SMK...

Do you remember what your start and max loads were?
That would be pushing my old memory a little to much, but I'm sure if you started at 46.0 you would be fine.
Seems I ran mine up to 50 grains before the bullets started to blow up, but was super accurate,
it ran a lot of 3/4" groups at 300 yards, 80 gr Bergers never did make it to the target that fast..

I'm shooting a 22-243 improved savage 110 action and a 26" 8 twist Kreiger barrel. My max is 49 grains with RL 25 and with 80 SMK I'm shooting 3510FPS and at 575 yards it will shoot 1-1/2 to 2" consistently given the wind will cooperate. I know it is isn't the same cartridge you asked about but maybe it will give you an idea. I have also loaded 47 grain of IMR 7828 under an 80 Nosler Comp getting 3540FPS and get the same accuracy as the SMK at 575 yards. Once again both I these are MAX loads in my gun.

I am shooting the 22-6mm Ackley, but I have a PacNor #4 12 twist barrel finished @ 27" and am shooting 55 gr. Sierra BlitzKings w/ N150. Chronographed the load yesterday 5-shots averaged 4026 fps, probably won't last long but its fun and accurate and a great long range coyote rifle..

Myself and 2 other buddies shot 50.0 - 51.0 gr RL 22 with 80 gr SMK and Fed 210 M for 3,700-3,800 fps with 28-30" barrels. Shot 1" (5) shot groups at 500 yards and 3 3/4" (3) shot groups at 1200 yards. Very very fast and flat. Top end load. On a hot day primers would pierce but usually in mid June groundhog hunting in Ohio we never pierced primers. Would help to bush factory Remington 700 bolts. Accounted for a 1100 yard and 105@ yard groundhog kills. ES were 15-16 fps.

I usually ran around 53-54gns H1000 behind 80gn Sierra or Bergers in my 22/6mm imp for around 3600-3650fps in 28”-30” barrels

MRP was the best powder I ever tried. Could get sub 0.2moa for three shots using 80.5 bergers around 3600 out of a 30" 8tw barrel.

Smarsh -

Howdy !

Have read that ( comparatively speaking ) RL-22 " burns " hotter than other powders of similar " burn rate " .
For my 6mm wildcat, I am testing cartridges assembled w/ RL-23, RL-25; and RL-26

I want to use a temperature stable powder, but do not want to prematurely use up my barrel.

With regards,

MRP gave me the best results using 80.5gr Bergers at about 3600fps. Sub 0.2moa for three shot grps. Used a standard case and win brass. 30" 8t Krieger

Found some old load data on MRP. 43-47 gr with a 80.5 berger using standard unimproved win cases, fed 210m, and seated 0.02 off lands. Best was 46.5 gr at almost 3600 with a 8sd. Wiuld l giving 0.2moa for three shot grps. Used a 30" Krieger with 8tw.
Would probably go with the improved version if I bought a new one
I will try to look it up but I used a standard case
