Anyone Make Their own in Line Seaters

I want to make a seater for a 7mm Shehane, and since I do barrels have a ready supply of "die blanks" I have 1 or 2 dies made from blanks, but the hole and stem already done, so what clearance is proper for the stem to hole in the top. I was thinking .0001" to .00015"

When I do my seaters I use Wilson stems that I fit to a little bit of a tight slip fit into the die top, never did measure one.
The tighter the better within reason....
When I pull it out with a finger pressed hard on the bottom, it makes a POP when it exits the stem hole...

Is this a reamed fit with chucking reamer or circle boring bar, and light passes?

I measured my stem and it is .2854" and just went ahead and ordered a .2855" chucking reamer. hope I didn`t mess up.

I do use a chucking reamer for the final cut on the die, and then use a abrasive to fit the stem to that...
My 7mm stems measure right at .285...
You should be good with what you have....

I'm with dusty. I will go one step further though and order extra seater stems. I always have a dozen or so on hand. this way I can get the fit I need or desire. I have gauge pins I use to indicate the blanks in with. I use a set up similar to what one might use to true up a Remington action. Works pretty slick.
I like to make a lot of parts myself, don't get me wrong. there is a certain feeling of satisfaction in doing so. I get that. However with the new shop and the new responsibilities I know have time is precious. I work full time for the city here, and the gun work is nights and weekends. Lee

Im a full time gunsmith and use wilson blanks or micrometer top newlons for my own stuff. I still have plenty that i made myself that was satisfying at the time

Never done it is another reason, but getting the stem to hole fit, at least as well as the best one I have, is a seater Jim Borden made for me, is going to be a labor of love.

I used to lap em in starting with 600 going up. Seal the bottom and the stem wont move itll seal that good. Like the borden die you can pump the stem kinda to knock the loaded round out. And you can make em whatever size and shape you want is a plus

I had my old smith modify a 284 seater for my 284 Shehane, and all was good except the new loooong freebore. The threads of the stem was above stem top. Gonna make one myself and correct this.

I build my own, but do it a little differently. I do make mine from a piece of barrel. I ream it with my chambering reamer. I make a floating piece to engage the ogive of the bullet. I install a small Mitutoyo micrometer spindle to set bullet depth. I'll take time later today to photo it and post the photos.

This is the version I came up with. It indexes off of the case, with enough clearance in the sleeve to allow the case to center up in the die body. I know, it's not technically an inline seater, but it's another option for ultra precise ammo.

Butch, I would be interested in the model number of the micro head.

Wayne, I buy all of my new gages and measuring equip. from Crescent Gage and Tool in Rowlett, Texas. I called Bill Rupert, the owner, and he said he would look up the part number and call me. I will post it later. It has a 0-.250 range and is very short. I also by my Deltronic Pin sets from them also.
