Anyone make FMJBT's into HPBT's?

I've read and heard that HPBT's or variations of such are more accurate than FMJBT's. I have a truck load of .308 FMJBT's and a mini-lathe. See where I'm going with this! Any thoughts?

Well, I made 10 rounds of 150gr. Hornady FMJBT's into BTHP's for my .308 BA.
I weighed them before and after and they lost about .2grs. I only drilled in about 0.0475 give or take a thou. Loaded them with Acc. 2460 to 40grs. That's a load that has worked very well for this rifle for many years using these bullets as intended, FMJBT's.
When the opportunity and weather are favorable I'll try them out and provide a report.

My dad sawed tips off some of his bullets to send to the Japs in WWII. Lots did that as they were making dum-dum's that might expand.

No clue if they had any affect on accuracy. Saw some tips off and try.

Look into the Hollow point of several HP bullets , and I think you'll "SEE" your answer .

what you HEARD is only part of the story.
1) as a rule fmjbt is a cheap low quality mass produced bullet.(there are notable exceptions lapua 185 fmjbt is one built as a target bullet)
2) some hpbts are precision made target bullets...designed for precision.

with a hole in both ends, high velocity massive spin, what will now hold the lead in place ?
putting a hp in low quality bullet will not make it a target bullet. below is three shots at 200 yards with a 185 fmjbt, in a 308 .529... .26 moa

It seems to me that you are comparing tomatoes to oranges. I'm not expecting to make a low grade bullet into a premium grade bullet, just seeing if a low grade bullet will be a better bullet than it was as stock.

ok one last time
it is not the hp that makes it a better bullet.
it is the process and the quality of the parts.
bye

FMJ bullets have the lead inserted from the rear, BTHP's have the lead inserted from the front and the jacket then tapered down to a small opening. FMJ's are made on high speed machines with less quality control than HPBTs. The HP is just a by product of the manufacturing process, not in itself a magic fix for accuracy.

My thoughts are, plan your work, work your plan. Report back after you have some data.

Yes, I understand the processes are different between the two type of bullets described. This is NOT what I'm trying to replicate.
In some books, videos and forums it is claimed that OTM/HP bullets perform better than FMJ's.
Many claim to know why this is so, many claim that it's unknown why HP/OTM's perform better, quality aside. I'd rather not get into that debate, however, from experience, it does indeed seem that HP's DO perform better. So as an experiment I thought why not take some of my FMJ's and drill a hollow point into some of them and see if there's an improvement, however slight.

triangular bullet, from a square barrel, shoot out of a .556 chamber, with a home made hollow point. problem is you used a drill bit they make a tool for this its called a meplat trimmer. you have to use the tool to make the hollow point true enough to make it shoot better
