Anyone in Wichita, KS with a bore scope

ToddKS

I am new to the forum and hoping I can find someone in Wichita, KS (or general area) that has a bore scope and might be willing to take a look at the barrel on my 308 Winchester. I have been having some issues and am considering a new barrel but would like to see what is really going on before I purchase a new barrel.

I am considering purchasing a bore scope but that would significantly cut into the barrel fund :).

Thanks,

Todd

I hate to say this to you at the risk of breaking your heart, but like a decent spotting scope, powder scale, and bore guide, certain things are a staple in this sport which you simply need to go out and buy and own for yourself. Even if you find somebody kind enough to meet up with you and let you use his borescope this time around, I'm sure you will find the need to use one again later.....and again later...and again later. Might as well buy a Hawkeye for yourself now and be done with it. Good luck.

No heartbreak here. I completely understand where you are coming from. Bore scope is on the short list of tools I intend to purchase. Unfortunately, unlike the federal government, I have to exercise some fiscal responsibility. I have invested significantly in reloading components in the last 8 months which has left the hobby fund a little short.

I also subscribe to the buy once cry once school of thought so if I am going to purchase a bore scope I would likely get the full up Hawkeye kit which is about $1000 to my door.

I am shooting a Savage action and can have a Shilen barrel and all the tools for around $500 so if I cannot find someone who is willing to help me out then I will likely just rebarrel at this point. Were I to purchase the bore scope I would have a nice bore scope but would not have the funds to purchase the barrel if needed which would negate the purpose of the exercise.

I like the way you think. Please consider a run for the Presidency, or at the very least, Congress! ;D

Just buy the Shilen barrel, after you see the inside of the Savage barrel you'll end up buying one anyway.

Agreed.

You're not going to see anything in the borescope that you can directly correlate to accuracy issues (unless you see something REALLY wrong, which is unlikely).

A lot of factory barrels look pretty rough, and Savage barrels have a reputation for not having the best internal finish. That said, internal finish doesn't directly correlate to accuracy; some ugly looking barrels out there shoot pretty well.

More than likely, you'll the biggest benefit you'll get from scoping the barrel is to see if your cleaning routine is working to your expectations.

Buy the Shilen (or have a Bartlein spun up for you by bugholes) and be done with it. ;)

The original barrel is currently back on the gun. I did buy the Shilen match barrel but it had an issue with sending the first shot high. By the time I figured this out by swapping back to the original barrel a couple times it was long past the point of me being able to ask Shilen to address the issue so I just left the factory barrel on.

I now shoot the mighty 6.5 Creedmoor!

Impact Precision action, Bartlien Barrel, McMillan stock. Very happy with that change. What I learned from my experience with the Savage rifle is that it is far easier to just start with top end components. I no longer spend my time trying to figure out how to make my rifle shoot. A little load development when the barrel gets changed out and back to shooting:)
