Anyone having luck with ruger precision rifle

Looking at possibly picking one up and throwing a prefit barrel chambered in 6x47 lapua. I have a Burris xtr-ii 5-25 sitting around needing a home and currently don't have a 6mm in the collection. Swap a barrel and a trigger and looks like it could be a good cheap accuarte rifle to play with. Whats your thoughts so far on these rifles? Favourite pre-fit for them?

I've got 500 to 600 rounds through a gen 1 .243. It shoots 1/2 to 3/4 moa out to 500 yards with hand loads. I'm planning to upgrade the trigger and scope this spring and stretch it out a little farther.

I have one. 308. Like the rifle. Like the ergonomics of the Armalite Rifle model 15 style layout.

Just got my load. Nosler 155 CCs further off the lands than you would think and H4895.

My buddy just got on in 6.5 creedmoore, but he hasnt got a scope yet so i havent been able to help him get started a load for it. Im interested to see what it will do... he got the new version..

My guess is its still a factory barrel and will shoot like a factory barrel.. but we will see.

Rubber started a craze. Tikka, Savage, Winchester who knows who else are coming out with their own version. Lots a barrels lengths too.

A friend of mine has one in 243 Win. with his best hand load it shoots 1/2 MOA at 200 yards. A lady brought one in 308 Win. to one of our F-Class Mid Range matches last year, with an Atlas type bipod and factory match amo. She was an experienced shooter but her first F-Class match. She shot a high Expert score. I don't think her rifle held her back.

I have shot HM scores (600yd F-class/ Harris Bipod and Seb Neo) with one using an aftermarket barrel...6.5 Creedmoor. The factory barrel shot well but I pulled it after 500rds or so just because it was....well...a factory barrel:rolleyes:. Certainly a good rifle to get started in competition at a reasonable price. The comparable offering from Savage would also warrant a look.

The Gen 1 hand guard is a PITA if switching barrels is done frequently. Haven't played with a Gen 2.
Timing barrel nuts for a gas tube that isn't there and a dumba$$ splined bushing soured me on the Gen 1 hand guard.

Very impressed with the gun from the front ring back. Had to put a little low strength Loctite on the bolt shroud cap to keep it from working loose, but that's not a big deal to me.

Yes, MHH, the handguard is a weakness in the design IMO. I replaced mine early on with a Seekins flat bottom K-mod. It mounts differently from the factory guard and is very rigid. I also replaced the weak plastic bolt shroud with an LRI unit. However, for someone new to the game and interested in Precision Rifle or F-class shooting, it is a good entry vehicle, can be upgraded if interest in the sport is cultivated and is an adequate and capable learning platform (if not more). I have built a dedicated F-open rifle and am in the process of building a new 'precision rifle class' rifle to supplant the RPR. It will be kept and used as a spare, for informal shooting, or perhaps as an extra rifle to allow interested friends to be introduced to the sport. If the competition bug had not bit me hard I would be perfectly satisfied with the RPR.

Agreed. It's a good choice for beginners and can be upgraded to suit more experienced shooters, too.

I just dropped off a rifle at Snipe customs. The owner goes by the name of "The German" on youtube. Look him up. He has a RPR shooting into the same hole at 100. Other than a new barrel, I think the only changes he made were cosmetic.

Thanks everyone for the reply

I am mostly interested in trying a chassis style backup rifle. I'm debating between that and a semi custom build on a Remington but timing and price pushing th RPR a head by a little. I'd like to play around with a 6mm of some sort and I figured the rpr would be a good start. Best thing is my best friend is considering getting into long range and he's picking up a RPR in 6.5 creed so I can now give the rifle a shot first before proceeding. If I decided against it will be a semi custom rem in 6x47 lapua

just logging on for the first time. from S.W. Florida. I am an old timer benchrest shooter looking into the long range game.
I have been checking out some of the offerings out there.
Has anyone have information and experience with the Howa HCR? using custom Mauser actions years ago for benchrest comp is my reason for interest in the Howa.

Welcome JackD! Hate to criticize your first post, but IMHO you would be better served to start a new thread to have your question answered. This thread is with regard to the RPR. Many would label it as hijacking the thread. 99 percent good guys here. Keep asking and providing your input also.
