Anyone have a CZ 527 in 17 Hornady Hornet? Opinions sought.

I'm thinking about getting a rifle chambered in 17 Hornady Hornet. It looks like a great little round that would be fantastic on Nevada ground squirrels. There aren't many offerings out there. As much as I'd love to order a Cooper, that probably isn't going to happen anytime soon. I'm considering either the CZ, Savage 25, or a TC contender with a custom barrel. I'd love to hear of other's experiences with the CZ, or any of the others for that matter.

Thanks in advance!

Lou

I've had one for a 527 varmint for a couple of years now, 17 Hornet, devastating little cartridge, half Moa out of the box, best value for the money hands down

CZ 527 American here. Nothing but good reports from me. 3,650 fps with 10.3 gr VV 110 and 20 gr vmax. Deadly on groundhogs out to 375 yards. Numerous one shot kills past 300 yards. Very very efficient and for a factory sporter barrel very accurate. Half moa or less.

Do you experience any particular challenges reloading this cartridge?

Not sure what you mean by that. As easy to load for as any other cartridge. Haven't had brass issues yet but probably only 2 reloads so far.

I've been looking at the same rifle but in the 24in varmint configuration,
looks like a suppressor rated for 22mag, 17hmr and 5.7x28 will work.
going to cut mine down to 20in and thread it

I have a 527 Varmint in 17HH. I do reload for it and overall it is not hard. Sizing is not the issue, it is seating those little .17 bullets. It is very easy to get them not started straight and tear up a case. I usually load 50 rounds at a time. I put 55 cases in a bag. Most tome at least 1 if not 2 or 3 necks get squashed.

For a long time, I could not get the same or better accuracy than the factory loaded ammo. Then I finally got a pound of AA1680 and also a pound of CFE-BLK. Now I am getting better groups than the factory.

For me at least it took a long time for the barrel to break in and be that it would clean up pretty fast. Now at 800 rounds it shoots great and cleans up well. It is fun to shoot.

My CZ 527 Varmint in 17 Hornet has been a great little gun lots of fun to shoot and very accurate. The trigger in them is outstanding and very easy to tune. I wasn't a big fan of the "set" feature so bypassed it and tuned it down to a 10oz trigger. I had the stock bed and the barrel cut back to 21 inches then threaded so I can shoot it suppressed. Shooting these things suppressed is soooooo much fun because they are crazy quiet. As was mentioned earlier, 1680 is one of the "go to" powders for the 17 Hornet and my load for mine is 12.4gr of 1680 pushing the 20gr Vmax.

The only thing about them that gives people grief is because they are a rimmed case they don't exactly feed through the magazine butter smooth and out of the box mine was no different. I took my magazine apart and lightly sanded the feed lips with 400, 600, then 1000 and finished by polishing the feed lips with a little buffing wheel on my dremel and a dab of Flitz. It helped it feed MUCH better and smoother but it still doesn't feed as smooth as my CZ 527 in 204. I know a lot of people order the single shot follower from James Calhoon and just single feed them but I haven't done that yet.

It's not hard to load for, the problem is the poor brass quality in the past. Common problems were weak primer pockets, excessive headspace due to brass and reamers not being compatible as designed by Hornady, concave primer pockets, primers backing out of the case when being fired. Hornady resolution was to stake the primers. Maybe this has all been resolved by now but after my first experience with Hornady's cartridge I wouldn't bother again.

I bought mine used.
Came with some brass, dies and bullets. Dies were Redding. I then went with a Hornady set to get the seating die.
A lot of fun. Mine is very sensitive to forward pressure on the butt stock, vertical stringing will raise its head.
Other than that it has been a fun one to work with.

It appears that I can't go wrong with the CZ. I just wish they had a blind magazine as opposed to the detachable. That thing is just plain ugly lol. Otherwise it would be a really nice looking rifle. I think I'll get one.

Thanks for sharing guys.

I have a 527 that did not shoot under MOA. Waiting for the rebarrel from PacNor. A shooting friend has one that shoots 1/2 MOA out of the box. Pay your money and take your chance.
