Anyone ever shoot F-T/R with iron sights?

I'm just curious if anyone here has ever shot and F-T/R match with iron (aperture) sights and how much different your results were from using a scope? The old song among LR prone shooters was that for most shooters a scope was just more trouble than it was worth as it tended to magnify issues like breath, pulse, etc. Just asking.

Never tried it, but I will say that if you have breathing and pulse events in your scope as an F-TR shooter, you have real issues and the scope is the least of your problems.

Yes it has been tried with only fair results. The scope on a rifle with a bipod doesn't have the troubles holding one would. The target is too critical for any success with iron but it won't hurt anything to give it a try. This is supposed to be fun anyway!!

I think someone told me a story about Lane B of team usa f/tr shooting the Nationals at Sac Valley in f/tr with his iron sight palma rifle a few years back? before I started shooting so cant say for sure.

Shawn Ahrens, down in Texas...as a prank!!

I saw Shawn do that at the Berger SW Nationals. I think it was the same year you set the Open record. The score was not up to his high standards and I lost some money because I thought he would do better than he did. I saw something similar at Butner during the practice for the Palma tryouts a couple of years ago. I was paired with a Palma guy and he shot the F-Class target at 1000 yards with a sling and Iron sights. He shot a 193 with a bunch of Xs which wouldn't have been a bad F-Class score on that relay.

A top level high master midrange / long range prone shooter will shoot at least 50% x count on our target. If said shooter shoots a 198-12x that translates into a 190 on the f class target. If said shooter shot off a front rest...who knows what the score would be. It don't take glass to smoke a f class target....wind reading and position still are the key.

I think you might be a little optimistic on the % Xs. There were 4 top prone shooters that shot F-T/R at the 2013 F-Class Nationals. Out of 135 shots, three of them had X counts of 33, 35 and 37. One of them only shot 1 day and his Xs were 10/45. The F-Open National Champion shot 59/135 which almost makes 50% and another top prone shooter shot F-Open and scored 37/135. The X ring on the 1000 yard F-Class target is hard no matter what you are shooting.

You dont want sling shooters shooting on the same target where scores are directly comparable as you will have sling/irons beating a lot of the scoped F class rifles. Remember what happened at the Xmiss match a year or three ago when the sling/irons guy beat all the F class scores when they were "converted"?

Simply put, you dont need glass to shoot center shots, or a rest, or a bipod, etc. But the reality of it is that you sorta gotta know what you are doing with those irons to shoot center shots. And just because you got a $3000 piece of glass sitting on top of a $4000 rifle doesnt mean you shoot center shots either. Personally, I can stick a scope on my rifle and I cant outshoot myself with irons, but then, I spend 99.9% of my time shooting irons. With practice, I am sure I could get better at it, but, I prefer the old school way.

It would make sense that you could shoot better with the glass, as you can "see better", but thats only part of the equation. (and why do I think this thread is going to turn into a peeing match.......) ::)

Tonyr....I was actually being conservative. I'm not the level of high master shooter that mudcat is, but I am capable of averaging 10x's per 20 shot string. Mudacat, on his good days is probably closer to 13-15 x's.

I must have misunderstood your post. 50% Xs on the prone target by shooters at mudcat's level is definitely doable on a regular basis. I thought you were talking about prone shooters with irons and slings averaging 50% Xs if the shot on the reduced f-class target. My post addressed that possibility.

In late '06 I shot the SOA for the first time (only time too, so far ;-( ) & was late getting to the line for the first match (practice, really) on Sunday.

Got squadded with some F'ers, me with my T2k & Palma barrel, bullets, iron sights, sling.

The 'new' F targets were there, I shot the same target as the other three, last target on the big end (that's why I was there after all!!) & "did the math" after almost every shot (cool! That wouldabeen an X!) & came off feeling pretty good for the day, all things considered.

Scores that day didn't count for the agg but for the week I ended up OK.

Didnt Randy say he has some family things to attend to? Could be wrong, but I thought it was him that said that. Last I saw him was either Oak Ridge in July or Perry. Either way, hopefully nothing serious.

I saw Randy Herman do it in Tennessee with a .223 and shoot pretty dang well at 1000.

What happened to Randy (FroggyOne2) where is he?

I was wondering the same thing....where's FroggyOne2? Here's a link to "Shooting FTR with Irons"

Has Natasha started shooting F-Class? I only met her at this year's Midwest Palma, she beat me... shooting sling & irons with the best.

She's someone to watch, that's assured.
