Anyone ever paint a laminated stock?

I have a Tikka T3 Sporter which has a laminated stock. I'm trying to customize it and I've been tempted to paint it however I wonder how well it would paint with all the layers, you would obviously have to do some prep work to fill and sand the irregularities.

They have painted and Hydro dipped laminate stocks...

Not me personally, but many have been done.

Phil.

I would clear coat it first to seal and make it hard. It would serve as a primer. I would then paint or dip and clear coat. Matt

A couple of good coats of Automotive Clear may bring out colors of the laminates that you didn't not know were there.
I have a rear grip SP laminated stock that was Hydro Dipped in a Carbon Fiber pattern and covered with a tinted red clear coat. A real looker!! Came out smooth as silk. Prep work in the answer to a nice finish.;)

Wood prep, just like metal prep is the basis for successful painting. Filling, priming and sanding for a smoothness will provide the best surface for paint. It's not hard to do but it can be tedious depending on what you want the final stock to look like. Smooth, shiny and slick can take lots of coats with wet sanding in between to assure the best surface.

What does he charge for a single color with clear coat? I know some depends on which paint brand and color you pick.
His prices are from $250 up too $600. one color and clear I am sure would be on the low end. He has made some crazy beautiful stocks. even painted one with some blue on blue ghost flames that was a gun of week feature a while back.

Can you PM me his contact info please.

I painted mine, used automotive primer, sanded, primed, sanded, primed, sanded and did this about 10 more times, to fill the pores and smooth the surface. Even hit a few spots with spot putty to minimize time. Probably had about 20 hours in this step. Then bedded the action as an afterthought, should have done this step first. Then took the gun to my buddies paint shop and painted the color, about 4 coats and then the clear, another 4 coats. It's quite the process and I enjoyed the hard work.

I have painted some Boyds laminated stocks and learned the stock needs to be primed, sanded and repeated several times. First time ran into a reaction between the glue and the chemical base of the automotive (Candy Orange) paint, probably acetone or some such. No more painting without doing better prep work detail.

Stockys laminated stock, sanded, covered, textured, in acraglas gel.

I'm not really worried about spending some time. Might be a nice Winter project, at least the prep work, I wouldn't mind paying someone to do the actual painting as I'd hate to spend that much time prepping then screw up the top coats.

I painted a walnut 40X by sanding it then using lots of automotive filler primer, smoothed out stuff, then did base coat clear coat. Paint is now 20 years or more old and it still looks great. In fact, the gun may be for sale shortly.
