I have done some whittling in the past. Here is one I did from some pine kindling. Also, I made the knife I carved it with. Patterned after what's known as a sloyd knife. The straight edge is sharp. Bronze bolster, walnut handle, brass pin, soldered tang to bolster.

Back when I was doing it a lot, Flexcut knives were the standard. A 3 piece starter set usually runs for less than $50. A bowl knife is nice to have if you want to make spoons, too. Just dont forget the sharpening gear to go with it.

You should have seen the hoops my ex went through while in culinary school, at a campus that didn't focus solely on culinary, bringing her knife roll to school and home.
