Anyone considered a 270. SAUM

Not a lot of information on the .277 cal long range options, but couldn’t find any info on this caliber. I have been debating on a .277 cal build for some time and with the new year I’m doing some dreaming. Next build should be done at the end of the month so got to start tossing some ideas around for the build after that.

With the 170gr Berger I was thinking something like a 270 SAUM might be kind of interesting. Push the 170 around 3000fps would be nice

Matrix Ballistics also makes a 155, 165, and 175 VLD for the 270's

Can’t find matrix bullets in Canada and I’m afriad ordering from matrix I’ll pay shipping, import and duty making them damn expensive to shoot. That’s why I’m lookong at the 170 Berger’s

I was just wondering if the 270 SAUM or Sherman short would be able to be run in a short action as I was told the Wsm almost needs a long action for true ballistic potentional
I wouldn't build either on a short action. Getting loaded ammo with long bullets amd proper throating would be a pain in the butt. Matt

My apologies I was thinking hammer bullets for some odd reason! Yes matrix are Canadian made, I believe Kamloops, BC. Wish the 175 bc was posted. Apparently there bc isn’t accurate, but bullets are still great!

So basically I’d be looking at a medium-long action regardless!

I beleive the SAUM would be a better case. The WSM case never worked out for a 6.5 in 1000 yard BR. It was too big. It also never worked well as a 7mm. The 7 SAUM was better. I prefer accuracy over the extra 100 feet per second. Now the WSM case in a 30 is a whole different story. Matt

If I’m not mistaken the 7 Wsm was an excellent cartridge and still very popular in some area’s of Benchrest and prs. I also would prefer the accuracy over the 100 FPS but I wasn’t sure if the SAUM offered any inherent accuracy over the Wsm?

The 300 WSM has shot alot of records in 1000 yard BR. It has also won alot of aggregates. I have seen many 6.5 WSM shot in BR, not any recently. When The WSM came out, many guys necked it to 6.5. At the time a 6.5-284 was pretty popular, especially in light gun. I saw many of them in both heavy and light class and none of them ever shot great. That phase or fad died quickly.

A few guys also necked to 7mm and they never shot very good either. One guy was determined to make them shoot and he went through a bunch of barrels and never got one to shoot. He asked me one day what he had to do to win. I told him build a 300 WSM.

I did see a few 7 SAUM's win alot and set a few records. It seems the difference in case capacity between the WSM and the SAUM is enough difference to make the WSM case less accurate. I dont shoot F-Class so i dont know about what was used there. I also know the ability to shoot small groups is needed to win in 1000 yard BR. 4 and 5 inch 10 shot groups are pretty common now days. I figured if the capacity wasnt right for a 180 grain Berger in a 7 WSM it sure wasmt going to get better by necking to a .277 bullet at 170 grains. I had a reamer made for the 270 SAUM and shortened the body a little and lengthened the neck a little. I have the barrel , dies, brass and bullets all waiting, but a few
Life obstacles got in the way. Maybe later this year i will get it going. Matt

The BC on some of the Matrix is real close, I know I confirmed the 165 to 2000 yards at a G7 of .318. For a hunting bullet in a heavy 270 cal it's proven excellent for me out to the 1000 yard range on elk. The Berger 170 I just haven't taken it out beyond a few hundred yards but its looking excellent so far.

Thanks everyone! I’m not 100% sold on running short action or short action cartridge but I just figured it might be a nice change having a short action magnum capable of being a midweight big game rifle. My dad has always shot a 270. Win for moose hunting and since a kid I’ve always wanted a .277. Going with a longer cartridge it would most likely be 270. AI, and trying to find a cartridge able to run in a short action capable of 165 or 170 around 3000 FPS would be awesome! The only reason I debated a saum over the Wsm was in hopes I’d be able to run it in a short action mag fed. So regardless I’d be looking at a long action then?

The 270 SAUM case is about right to drive the 170 grain Berger to 3000 FPS and have a full case of powder. If you look at the 7 SAUM shootimg the 180 Grain Berger, it is accurate and wins. The BC on that 170 grain bullet is really good. It should have slightly less recoil also. Matt

That’s what I had figured. I was estimating 2950-3000 for the saum and 3000-3050 for the wsm. Just hopes the saum would be able to run in a short action

Bigngreen shoots, a .270 WSM with, Berger 170 EOL's and "others" ( matrix 165's ) for, Elk at long range with, a 1-8 twist I believe, but not sure what Action ! I think, he's running a Tikka T3 with, the longer .300 WM Magazine and the Long action, Bolt stop's. Not sure if he hang's out on this "site" or, just the Len Backus', LRH site. Also read, that the Canadian's are playing with the 7mm-.270 WSM or, 7mm-.300 WSM ( same thing ) anyone know much about, that one ? High BC 7mm bullets with, 65-70 grains of Powder and the longer necks, w/ 35* shoulder. OOP'S just saw that, Bigngreen had posted earlier,.. He's "the Man" on, the big .270's ! That's what I get for starting at the bottom of, a posting,.. LOL !
