Anybody own a Ruger 77 Mark II? Thoughts?

I have 2 Ruger M77, for hunting...neither is a tack driver, about 1" 5 shot groups with bullets they like at 100 yds. Great for my hunting needs. But I wouldn't build a rifle around that action. They are cast but I only knew one guy that had one come apart with factory ammo, many years ago on first models...and he is afraid of them. Remington has lots of after market parts available for your build, stocks, triggers, aluminum chasis, bolts, etc. Remington blue steel 223 actions are available, for $596 at Midwest Gun Works...or stainless-steel Definance Machine Tenacity 223 action available for $995...I'd use one of these for a build... over the Ruger M77... another opinion, and it depends on Your needs and Your budget.

A shooting buddy of mine had a Ruger 77 .280 with the heavy varmint barrel. This gun would fire tiny little clover leafs repeatedly...probably 1/4 moa gun.
He liked it so much he bought another 77 varmint in 25-06. I don't think that gun ever shot less than 1-1/4"...no matter what he fed it.
I think that kind of sums up the Ruger 77.
You might get lucky and get a good barrel....or maybe not!
For hunting they are plenty good.....

I have a Ruger M77, 220 swift, tang safety, red recoil pad. Shoots like a house on fire. Made in 1975. Controlled feed. I’d recommend. Not sure for a build, tho?

I have two that I purchased new more than thirty years ago; one is a ,223 and the other a special run Davidson's limited production gun in 7.62x39. Both shoot very well.

The .223 has been fired easily several thousand rounds as I did a lot of load development work with many different bullets over the years. I can't shoot half-inch groups every time like the Internet guys with the "all day long" rifles, but I've gotten enough groups in the 5/8" - 3/4" range that I'd call this rifle accurate. A 6x scope has been plenty adequate.

The 7.62x39 has been used almost exclusively with cast bullets and it shoots some of them very well even with a 4x scope.

Except for the addition of scope sights, these guns are straight-out-of-the-box; no tampering, "upgrading" or anything else.
