Anyboby using a 6.5x57mm Mauser with modern components

I am looking for a more efficient less costly round to compete with in F-class Open. I shoot year round and am tired of going thru 3 or 4 barrels a year shooting a 6.5x284 !

I want a cartridge that can launch 140gn Berger VLD's at 2950fps & give me 2000 rounds of competitive barrel like,.5moa or better at 100o yards).

I believe the previously mentioned cartridge could accomplish this in standard form or with a 30 degree improved shoulder with out the need to modify your bolt face as you would have to with the 6.5x55 Swed.

I have read quite a bit about this cartridge & I believe this could work w/ less body taper & a 30 degree shoulder. I was wondering if anyone has experience with the standard round & 140gr bullet weight.

I don't have one but I am just brain storming here. Why not go with the 6.5-06? With the 6.5X57 want you have to use a long action so you can seat your bullets out long enough so they will not take up your powder space and still work through the action. You can get good cases like Lapua 30-06 to make your 6.5-06 out of also. I don't know what the barrel wear would be with one though. Any 6.5 pushing a 140 gr bullet 2900+ or - fps that you shoot fast and heat up the barrel is not going to last too long. Just some thoughts.

by the time you would get it all figured out you would have used up how much of the barrel life? 6.5x47 would be a worth looking at,but you won't get the speed you're after. good luck in your search. cliffe

All three,6.5x55,6.5x57,6.5-06)will get you there, but require a long action for proper bullet seating. I've built a couple of 6.5x55's. Often times the bolt face will have sufficient size to accept Swede brass,Lapua can give you problems occaisionally, so it's best to physically confirm it). Most domestic brass has a rim size that will work on a .473 face...manufacturing tolerances and all,you know. Even if you had to open the face a few thou, it would be cheaper than A.I. dies, fire forming, etc. etc.
I've always been curious about the 6.5x57...might be my next build.:thumb:

I have one 6.5x57 Steyr rifle and three 6.5x55 target rifles. I can't find a difference in ballistics. I would go with the 6.5x55 due to the availability of components.
