Any woodsman know this forest plant?

A friend in Idaho sent this photo, someone he knows found this growing near John Day, Oregon. Looks familiar but I don't know what it is. I wish my ol' dad was still alive, he would.

The forest around John Day are well known for mushroom pickings , my family and I use to fish lake Magone every year
