Any wood workers on here?

Anyone know anything about old wood thickness planers? I got this one here and the feed wheel is just slipping on the wood and I was wondering if there was anyway to increase the tension.

There is a bolt with a spring on the underside of end blocks that hold the feed wheel and I was wondering if just tightening the bolt a little more would do anything?

Also the smoother roller wheel directly under the the feed wheel , should it be slightly higher than the table?

Yes and yes. That’s an old warhorse! I love it! Take care of that one.
Thanks.

Its a heavy old girl (solid cast iron). had to do some minor maintenance to the gear box last weak and replace a couple of belts.

It came out of a high school shop but it was 3 phase so we had to swap in a single phase motor

Clean and polish the lower trays. Then spray them with 4D-40 every few boards.

If it has springs to apply pressure when clamping the feed wheels together, replace the springs. Sharp blades make a difference as well. Grease the bearings on all rollers. If they don't have zerks make sure the bearings are good. A hard wood, with dull blades and a loose clamp on the feed will all cause what you are seeing.

I had the same problem with a similar planer. Problem went away when I installed an insert cutter head. Expensive but worth every penny.
Be sure to to research setting the knives and locking them in the head when you change the knives out. A spare set of knives is a great item to have on hand if you are using the planer on a frequent basis.

Sharp well adjusted knives+properly adjusted feed rollers=smooth surfaces

Thanks everyone . The knives have been done not long ago and are set right. Went and checked the bottom roller and it was slightly lower that the table(wood wasnt touching it) so a little adjustment there and its feeding like a champ.

Walt I want one of those for my 18 inch delta so bad. They make such a difference in how nice a cut you get.
