Any rockchuck/prairie dog varminting in New Mexico,Arizona or Nevada?

I will be visiting USA next year, dropping into New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada. Just checking to see if there is any varminting in these areas. I wont be bringing guns with me, but just wondering if they are out there?

Any woodchuck/ground hog varminting in New Mexico,Arizona or Nevada?

Since you changed the question this answer is not applicable. See below.

Hope it's a fun trip.

Woodchuck (groundhog) are primarily Northeastern animals. States like Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio and even South to Atlanta, Ga. are the primary habitat.

You are going out West. The states you speak of are primary desert states. You will find varmints there but remember, it's mostly desert or high mountain areas.

Varmints found will be prairie dogs, ground squirrels, marmots, coyotes, feral pigs, jack rabbits and other things that may come to mind later or get added by others.

No groundhogs (same as a woodchuck) live in those states. Maybe someone has one there as a pet and you can visit to see it.

Enjoy your trip.

G'day on ya !

You might want to re-ask the question, specifically asking "rockchuck" and prairee dog shooting; in those states.

OK, I wasnt sure of the difference. I have changed the wording in my original post.
Thanks for the heads up.

What is your schedule? Might have to look into an outfitter to supply all needs. Jackalope flea market in Santa Fe has pd's in an outside display. Would get you familiar with what to look for. Have fun, Tom.

I September I hope to be driving from L.A to Raton in New Mexico, then dropping into Las Vegas on the way back. I will look out for outfitters who can supply a varmint rifle for a one day hunt just to give it a go as long as I can get what ever paperwork I need to be licenced to shoot. If there are some decent varminting grounds in the area, then I will follow things up.

Here's the good news mate, no license required. Our club hosted a group from a sporting club in Germany this year & they shot everything from 22's to 50 BMG. Everything that these blokes can't legally own or is very restrictive. They had a ball playing Rambo & Dirty Harry.

Check out the Varmint Hunters sites, more than likely there is an operation or a member on one of them that's looking for someone to go out shooting with them. If they don't have a spare rig to go out shooting jackrabbits, there is something wrong.

I would love another go at 50s, sounds like I might be able to have some fun there without too many hastles.

Actually, I'm sure that if you do an internet search, that there are gun shop where you can "rent" a sub gun & buy a few hundred rounds & blow them off on their range. I'm sure that you've never shot a full auto & I can tell you it's a blast. Literally.

There is a gun shop just a couple blocks east of the "strip" in Vegas that has full auto guns. Just buy the ammo at the store and you then shoot at their indoor range.

Yep, havent shot full auto for a long time, so I think I will drop in and have a go.
I would still like to have a go at rock chucks after reading a about that style of varminting in magazines and websites.

Don an internet search, there are guys who "outfit" for prairie dogs so I'm sure someone does it for rockchucks & jackrabbits. More than likely, they have some spare equipment.

All those states are loaded with Coyotes. In Nevada you don't need an out-of-state lic. or tag for shooting coyotes only. Check the fish and game website, they are a Large Varmint in my book, easier to see and hit.

Although, I would jump at the chance to have a go at Coyotes, I was hoping to have a go on one of the good prairie dog towns, doing the laydown (or on a bench) long range sniping. I will do a search when it gets closer, looking for outfitters. It should be a good trip.

Range

The black-tailed prairie dog's historic range stretched from extreme southern Saskatchewan in Canada and Montana south through the western and central Great Plains to the desert grasslands of western Texas, New Mexico, southeastern Arizona and northeastern Sonora, and northern Chihuahua in Mexico. Loss of prairie habitat has led to its disappearing from parts of its historic range. It is still found in Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, and Wyoming.

I have also seen them on the I-76 stretch from Grand Jct. to Salt Lake City in Utah.
