Any options to replace Sinclair style bolt-stop on R700?

A friend of mine acquired an R700 with one of those obnoxious Sinclair plunger style bolt-stop/release mechanisms. He asked if there was anything I could do to replace it with something that didn't look like a mini kill-switch on the side of his action. I see from Sinclair's ad that these use a 5/16x24 thread so a 0.250 Defiance style won't cover the hole. I suppose I could plug-weld it with TIG or solder or locktite a bolt piece, but looking for something cleaner or more elegant.

Any ideas?

Might reach out to Mike Bottinger of Buffalo Gunsmithing. I saw one he did with a Ruger 77 type, kinda Mauser like. Looked great and I think big enough to cover the hole.

I'm pretty sure Farley's are not thick enough either to cover the 5/16 hole. They are about 0.250 like the Defiance.

If it was mine, and it bothered me this much, I would make a threaded plug, solder it in, and then install my normal side bolt release. While I was set up in the collet indexer on the mill I would round off the plug. --Jerry

oh and the farley bolt stops have a screw thru the face straight in to the action instead of pinned like your picture shows. maybe you could call jim and get one of his old style. they will cover the hole.

Dusty you happen to have a picture of Jims old style? He owes me a favor I maybe calling him...

Thanks for the pics Dusty. Avidflyer is the friend I was talking about in the original post. It's his gun I'm wanting to modify.

good luck! let us know how it turns out. maybe you could make one like the farley but taller if you cant get jim to make one. jim made those by hand as he didnt have a cnc in the pre-black widow days.

Installation instructions show them to be .250.

Still don't see why one can't solder in a plug, install the new bolt stop. Clean up what remains to match and take care of the aesthetics unless the finish is something exotic.

These guys claim their bolt stops are "wider" than normal, tho they don't list a measurement... might be worth giving them a call to get the details. If they are wider than 0.312" you should be in business.

They link to a couple of prints for inletting. It shows 0.258 as the slot width. Not quite enough. Everything except the pin diameter (0.079 v. 0.094) seems to be exactly the dimensions of the Defiance part.

Perhaps they could make a one-off, but at $65 for the regular version ($25 for one from Defiance), a custom would likely be prohibitively expensive.

I'm certainly leaning in this direction.
