Any one shooting barrel block type rifles

In your experience do they behave differently than traditional action held set ups?
Where on the barrel was your block located? (fore and aft)
Very interested in how a barrel block might effect OBT application and calculation. And how they deal with barrel heat and expansion.

I never went that way....simply because there is a new learning curve. So, I opted for bigger actions for my Match guns to support the long, heavy tubes.

I shoot BAT 8.5" "M" actions in my light guns...even for the Dasher, and my HG is a MASSIVE 10" by 2" BAT "L".

Now to be honest...every time I see one that SHOOTS like I wish mine did, I start to reach for my credit card. Held off so far, but, a man can only take so much!!!

I have 2 barrel block rifles that I shoot in F-open. The first one I made myself and came out plenty beefy. The second one I bought and it is much more slim and trim. The theory is that the rigidity increases with shortness of barrel so if you grab onto a longer barrel and hold it short you can stiffen it up. Also I didn't know how to bed an action so installing a barrel block and free floating the action worked for me.

I rolled my own.

I used a 36" aluminum "I" beam oriented as a "H" cross section, as my rifle's core structural member.

The upper central gap between the inner beam side walls, provides 2 parallel contact lines on the barrel....
like a "V" block does.

For the "block ", I used a " plumbing repair clamp " ( 2 of them doubled-up ) to provide the top clamping surface.

I use 4 carriage bolts and torque plates ( double thickness ) borrowed from correct size "U" bolts... to draw the barrel down against the gap in the "H: beam; using nylon insert lock nuts. A slot is cut in the central upper valley of the beam, to accept the recoil lug. and a second slot cut to accomodate the trigger.

I used pieces of 5/4 composite deck board, to fashion the forend " block " and butt stock. A small strip of deck board curved edge is used as a removable cheek rest; to allow access for a cleaning rod.

My rifle is chambered in a 6mm of my own design, and is used for both varmint and target work.
The barrel is a 29" SS 6mm 1-8 5"C"-rifled. I spec'd the barrel to have a sufficiently long length of straight section to allow for use of the " barrel clamp ". The barrel is a Palma taper.

The overall design and selected components allowed me to tune out " verticle ", as the barrel clamp can be positioned or re-positioned as needed. After starting group testing w/ the clamp set-up positioned right up next to the recoil lug, incremental testing showed that verticle shot dispersement went away upon moveing the clamp 1/2" further fwd on the rifle.

I have $30 in the "stock / barrel clamp " assembleage. The aluminum "H" beam was given to me for free !
The cost was only as high as it was, because I was not able to find suitable lengths of the desired composite deck board; and was forced to buy an entire 8' long board !

The rifle shoots great, and gave me my best-ever 5-shot 100yd group. I'm not sure I'll ever go back to use of a conventional rifle stock, again ?! ( My gin, my shooting needs ).

AndyA and 357Mag,

Can you post pictures or attach pictures to a PM? How much does the finished rifle weigh?

I like the idea of a floated barrel and action AND it would drive the traditionalists nuts!

Howdy !

Can we try this......

I posted several pics of my rifle’s “ stock”, in a response to a ” Varminter Stocks “ OP.

You can see the pics I posted using my 357Mag monicker by searching for
“ innocence of your eyes “ and selecting 357Mag as the post-er.
I sent the pics in 24 Apr 2017.

When the Op comes up, just scroll down to find my pics.

Please let me know whether it worked.

Howdy !

Don’t intend to hijack the post ! I forgot to mention my rifle’s wt.

In-scoped... it weighs 14.5 lb. The action is a Wichita WBR1375 single shot, barrel is 29” 6mm SS Palma taper, that is 1.250” diam where the barrel clamp sits.

The rifle sports Ken Ferrell 20moa scope base and Ferrell 4 screw rings.

The forened was cut to be just 2.250” wide, as that width fit the front bag I’ve been using on my old Wichita rest for some years now.

The trigger wt doesn’t matter too much, but it is a 2oz Jewel.
The trigger guard is fashioned from a galvanized conduit holder, and the trigger can be removed w/o having th totally disassemble the rifle.

Hope that helps.

Interesting. I have a 30 BR action and barrel from a rail gun 1.450 30 inch barrel with a tuner, and a big Hall action. It was someone's project and they tried to mount it in a wood Robertson style stock. the barrels is bedded and they tried to screw the stock to the barrel, and the action is floated. There is no recoil lug, so the screws came loose while shooting. They then glued the barrel to the stock. I got it on a trade, and don't know what to do with it really, but this thread peeked my interest on how I might properly bed this thing. It shoots tiny little holes. It weighs close to 40 lbs.
